RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted April 4, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 4, 2020 Further work on the 74XX chassis involves putting the brake gear together: Thanks to very clever design by High Level, the brake gear is designed to be removable for painting, maintenance etc.: 5

I cut out lots of small oblongs and taped them all together, easier than trying to measure between the pilasters: I then traced around the template and cut a piece of mount boards out to the shape required: very clever solution there, will be filing it away until I get round to adding the bridges to Brent! Hi Rich - it's virtually all Woodlands Scenics, but always a mix of various shades, some buff, some darker buff (or brown) and some 'cinder' colour. There's also some green foam (a little) mixed in with some of the mixes, depending on which part of the siding is being ballasted. This gives some 'integrated' weed growth, right in the ballast, in addition to later additions of more green foam and static grass. 3 1 3
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted April 7, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 7, 2020 I've put up a blog post here - outlining the modifications I've needed to make to the 74XX gearbox, to get it to fit between the frames.

Haven't seen or heard that approach before, but that's not saying much, really, I suppose. Must get down to doing some ballasting soon, but only once the track is down and fully tested . . . . . .

RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted April 19, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 19, 2020 The 74XX has now been liberated from it's electrical tether, even though trying to get it to run consistently smoothly and sorting out the pick-ups brought me almost to the end of mine. Work remaining to be done on the loco body (apart from painting and weathering) largely consists of adding to top front lamp iron and reinstating the rivet detail around the cab roof area, that was lost when it was being converted to a 74XX (this will be done using Archers transfers): 8
