RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted January 31, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 31, 2018 Don't forget the Swedish furniture. Always useful. Rob. Volvo front seats ? Comfy, but not very helpful as a baseboard.

RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted February 6, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 6, 2018 Well, being a responsible Chief Mechanical Engineer, I have ordered two locomotives for the Vale of Radnor Light Railway, that can join the existing roster in due course. RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted February 12, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 12, 2018 Noted. But you still need a B4... I think you might be on to something, there. One more step being taken towards getting the layout construction started, in that a very kind friend has found some pre-owned (but in tip top order) point motors for me. RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted February 13, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 13, 2018 Another step towards getting the layout underway was taken last night, when I was fortunate enough to acquire some small goods yard buildings for 'Bethesda Sidings'. They had originally been acquired by our area group as part of someone else's layout, but have now been deemed surplus to the club's requirements, so I offered some money, which our treasurer was only too happy to accept. They will go in the goods yard, together with the scratchbuilt goods shed and weighbridge office previously shown on the thread:
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted March 19, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 19, 2018 Not 'Bethesda Sidings' quite yet, but here is one of the locos that will be seen on the Vale of Radnor Light Railway, whilst working on another outrageously improbable light railway, namely the South Polden Light Railway. Barclay diesel 'Buntie' is seen here in the early 1960s in the SPLR goods siding at Bleakhouse Road, which was the interchange location with British Railways:
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted April 16, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 16, 2018 Had a bit of a 'mock-up' session this afternoon, as I'm getting close to being in a position to start building the baseboards and I needed to see whether the scenic section would be 4' or 4' 6" in length. I chose the latter in the end.
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted April 28, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 28, 2018 Well, finally, I'm please to say that I have a kit of parts for the baseboards now cut out in birch ply:
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted May 2, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 2, 2018 Some cutting and gluing has been taking place: For once, I am adding the board alignment dowels as the boards are being built!

RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted May 5, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 5, 2018 The top of the main board is now curved to allow the backscene to be dropped in behind the scenery. Note the small sections cut out of the two end pieces to allow for the curved backscene:
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted May 13, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 13, 2018 I've decided not to use the Paul Iliff stone overbridge as the scenic break to hide the exit to the fiddle yard, as it's at quite a skew angle and really takes up rather more space than I'd like, so I'm building a small girder bridge with brick abutments instead. The plan for the stone overbridge now is to use it on another, smaller cameo layout set on the light railway itself. This is the state of play on the new bridge:
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted May 23, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 23, 2018 This is the current state of play with the baseboards. The main scenic board is largely completed, although I have yet to add some diagonal bracing underneath: Note the arrangement where the two rear corners curve to allow the backscene to be slotted in behind the actual board. the backscene will hopefully be laminated and will rest against birch ply backing boards (not installed in these photos) on three sides: In the meantime, construction of the fiddle yard board is also underway:

RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted June 3, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 3, 2018 The main boards are nearly complete: The overbridge is almost complete, apart from adding the wing walls permanently and the Archers rivets to the girders:

RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted June 3, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 3, 2018 Interesting road surface on the bridge Tim, may I ask what you have used please. G It's actually the slightly sanded-down surface of some 60 thou black plasticard that I got from somewhere a while ago, can't remember from where, sorry! It won't stay like that, though, as it will receive appropriate scenic treatment to reflect the fact that it's actually a farm track, not some kind of metaled road.
