RMweb Gold TravisM Posted May 6, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 6, 2017 I have been offered a Dapol 86401 in NSE paint scheme and was wondering when this loco was repainted in these colours? Julian Sprott
Tatty
Don't know the exact date, but as it's got angled ends it's pre late 1987.
Bomag
In the modelled form without the MU connectors its right from September-ish 2005. In the original form it would have to be 2nd half 1986 as the earliest photo I can find is Jan 1987. http://www.railwayherald.co.uk/imagingcentre/view/148221/LC
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted May 6, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 6, 2017 The Network South East Railway Society lists it as January 1987. It was supposed to haul a ceremonial launch train on 17th but this was postponed due to bad weather and actually ran in March.
Mike at C&M
For some reason, 86.401 seemed to be one of the more regularly seen 86s at Carlisle - well away from NSE territory. This picture was taken on October 4th 1989.
RMweb Gold Metr0Land Posted May 7, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 7, 2017 For some reason, 86.401 seemed to be one of the more regularly seen 86s at Carlisle - well away from NSE territory. This picture was taken on October 4th 1989. BR278 (4).JPG I think the various classes were originally painted in proportion to the financial contribution required from each sector to maintain/operate the class. Because of the Northampton peak services, NSE effectively had to pay for approx 1 x Class 86 so got 1 in their colours, even though the passenger ones were sort-of common-user, and could thus appear anywhere. ChrisH-UK
I think it was repainted from NSE into RES around 1992, later it went into EWS and according to the AC Loco Group website it was repainted back into NSE colours in 2005. As a footnote for how widely this loco served, the pool of locos for Cobbler trains was also used for parcels trains for a while before they formally became parcels locos and there were booked passenger turns for parcels locos
DerekEm8
Similar date to the Bomag's Railway Herald picture above 86401 Euston 17 Jan 1987
Coach bogie
I have shots of NSE 86401 at Glasgow on the down TPO - about as far away from NSE territory the wires will let it travel. Mike Wiltshire
