Pacific231G
We also have a new arrival for the shed, a 'Bicyclette'. She's totally out of place, they were all scrapped in the 1940's, but I couldn't resist her and she'll make a lovely shed shunter. 'Mouette' means 'Seagull', perfect for a layout set on the coast. Peter Hi Peter Mouette is gorgeous and just because they were scrapped in the 1940s doesn't mean they should have been. A Chef with a soft spot for them, a tarpaulin to hide it or some obscure job shunting wagons in the glass works and Bob's your uncle. It worked for 231G558, forgotten as a bunker oil heating boiler at Dieppe Mme. while every one of the other Etat Pacifics were scrapped, so why not a Bicyclette. Was the model scratch built or does someone do a kit? P.S. Sad news from the real Eu. The line from Abbeville is to be closed so Eu will not longer be a junction (it was once the junction for three lines) and the only line to Le Treport -Mers les Bains will be the from Paris via Beauvais and Aumale. All but two arrivals from and one departure to Abbeville are already buses but the trains are apparently very busy. kirtleypete
It's a new kit by a French manufacturer, Dominique Adiasse. He built the model for me, but when it arrived I had to replace the motor and pickups as it would never have run properly with those he'd fitted. Now, though, it's fine, and he did an excellent job of the rest of it. Peter
kirtleypete
The track in the engine shed is finished now so I can make a start on the building. We wanted to have pits outside as well but the baseboard framing is in just the wrong place so we'll have to live with just having them inside the shed. The pits are by KS Laser, a superb product. I'll never build one from scratch while I can buy these. Peter
kirtleypete
I've put in the shed floor and am well on the way to finishing the building itself. Most of the detail inside the shed won't been seen, but I will be putting in LED lighting and we may well want to take photo's looking into the shed. The smoke hoods should be all the same but I didn't buy enough Aluminium channel! I sprayed the whole building brown using an aerosol can, and am now adding all the printed paper panels for the bricks, roof and planking. kirtleypete
I have ballasted more of the track and unfortunately I've now got to wait for it to dry which at this time of year takes for ever. Removing the horrible lumps of plastic from around the tie bars of the Peco points transforms them. The shed floor is done and I've stood the building in position, mainly to get it out of my workshop. I've begun work on the sand gantry and adjoining building. French engines had the sandbox on the top of the boiler; they just stopped under the gantry and filled up; the dry sand was piped onto the gantry from the furnace which was in the building alongside. 'Evitez Fumee' means 'Avoid smoke'. Peter Edited December 23, 2017 by kirtleypete

kirtleypete
I copied a sign at Nogent sur Marne shed Jackie, and it just says 'EVITEZ FUMEE'. Peter Edited December 24, 2017 by kirtleypete
JAMO
The "LA" was certainly written in small between the two words. It's a railway style. "EVITEZ LA FUMEE" is really more realistic and more french looking. But you do as you wish as usual...
kirtleypete
I've made a new sign Jackie; it can be stuck over the old one. This is how I make a sign look old and rusty... kirtleypete
The loco shed is fixed in place now and the area around it has begun to be detailed. I've put the yard offices in place, just loosely at the moment until the ballast had dried fully. The coal area comprises a wooden stockade with a small plinth at the end on which stands a conveyor. A mechanical shovel will stand in the stockade to load coal into the conveyor in due course. Peter Edited December 26, 2017 by kirtleypete
RMweb Premium Andy Hayter Posted December 26, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 26, 2017 Looking good Pete. I would expect to see a large stack of briquettes as well as the loose coal.
kirtleypete
There's only one problem there Andy - no one produces them as far as I know and it's a hell of a thing to try to make. We will need them, but at the moment I'm not sure how. The space beyond the coal compound is earmarked for the stack. I've made individual briquettes for the loco's, but making half a dozen is one thing..... We need a stack of wood for lighting up too. Peter
bbishop
Pete, Have a look at the Juweela web site, and look for Brikett. Go in via the Spur Null Magazin web site and "suchen" for Brikett. Bill
Allegheny1600
BonJour, Peter! This is looking 'tres Magnifique', I am most impressed. I never knew there was very much available at all for French 'zero' except maybe the very high-end stuff. I love the MTH 1-4-1P and am pleased to learn you are happy with it. Will continue to observe with admiration. John.

kirtleypete
Although the track still needs cleaning up, I couldn't resist posing some engines outside the shed. The point motors aren't fitted yet, and with the springs removed the points centre themselves. Peter
JAMO
I've made a new sign Jackie; it can be stuck over the old one. This is how I make a sign look old and rusty... Thanks, Peter Happy New Year Peter (and to anyone) Your new weathered sign looks very good Peter!! ...and nice dépôt! Très bien fait !
kirtleypete
We have finally been able to install the turntable, which completes the track laying. I've spray painted the track and installed the water tank; it's much too small but it's all we've room for. There is a much bigger tank out of sight beyond the road bridge! On the backscene is M. Hulot's house from 'Mon Oncle'....we like to have a little Hulot on all our layouts. Peter
kirtleypete
Now comes the frustrating part when I've got to wait for it all to dry! I was going to use a backwoods Miniatures shovel for the coaling stage but they have ceased trading so I scratchbuilt one instead. The bucket is a bit big but it was all I could find at short notice...the cap from a Pritt Stick! The pile of briquettes is made from layers of foam board. kirtleypete
We have a new engine, a Fulgurex 050TQ made, believe it or not, in 1977. It converted to DCC very easily and runs like a dream. I've finished painting the track now that the ballast has finally dried. I'm still waiting for the water cranes order in September to arrive (!), and some yard lamps need adding...other than that we're about there. Killybegs
... and you have been doing all this while working on Birmingham Snow Hill. That's amazing. Edited January 25, 2018 by Killybegs

kirtleypete
The scenic side of the layout is about complete; the water cranes arrived and I collected some MK35 figures from Detailed Miniatures at Bristol on Sunday. We'll be ready for the first exhibition at Huntingdon in March. I'll take a full set of pictures and some video at Huntingdon, Peter
kirtleypete
I wasn't happy with the turntable well - it was too clean and didn't look like concrete. I found this picture on the internet: By flipping and pasting the image I created an A4 sheet of concrete ready to use: This was printed off and cut to the right shape to line the pit: I drew over some of the cracks with a black pen to enlarge them, and the grass is covering the bits where the paper didn't quite meet! Finally a sprinkling with weathering powders and a prey with Dullcote finished the job. If anyone would find the artwork for the concrete useful, e-mail me at peter.smith5547@gmail.com and I'll send it to you. RMweb Premium DIW Posted February 4, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 4, 2018 That turntable well really looks good now. The grass blends better with the concrete colour; not such a contrast as before. Super job!
