Night Train
Looks much better with the mud around the tracks. Might be worth putting a few wooden boards in the points, especially the one on the roadway.Might be easier than mud too.

SDJR7F88
The eighth update on the build of the WW1 Narrow Gauge Trench Railway in 009 Scale. With just over 3 weeks left until the layouts first outing, the pressure is really on to get layout complete in time for the show. Following on from the last update, work on adding the mud effect to the layout has continued, with the mud now down around the tank servicing area and artillery battery, as well as in the trench itself. With the mud in place details, such as figures, ammo boxes and shells can now be added, bring the layout to life. Many of these have been produced by W^D Models, who specialize in producing vehicles, figures and items from WW1. With just 3 weeks left until the layouts first outing at the Weston-Super-Mare Model Railway Show, on January 14th 2018, there's still lots to do, including adding mud to the farm yard, building the table and of course testing to check everything's in working order. Hope you enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Dj3rmlXNVA Edited December 22, 2017 by SDJR7F88

SDJR7F88
Will you throw in a Whippet tank on the layout too? You must of read my mind! Just added the other day
SDJR7F88
More progress on the layout today, with the field and farm yard getting the mud treatment. As well as the mud, more of the figures and little details are now in position, along with the second artillery battery, located in the field next to the Farm Yard. I've also made a start on rubble and debris around the Stables, as well as weathered up the remaining tanks and vehicles. Next step is the seal the mud with a matt varnish, and add static grass the field around the artillery battery.
SDJR7F88
Well here we are! 2018, and less than two weeks until the layouts first outing at the Weston-Super-Mare - Model Railway Show (Sunday 14th January 2018) So much still to do, and time is fast running out... The pressure is certainly on! Time to do some static grass today me thinks.... SDJR7F88
Just over a week and a half until the layouts first outing, and things are starting to come togetherThe (once) meadow has started to come to life with the addition of Static Grass Tufts and Poppies, which surround the Second Artillery Battery. I've also left a strip bare, to give the effect of a lifted section of line, that is now no longer needed. Ground cover has been added to wood, featuring dead wood, Ivy and more Poppies, along side the track and road side. More tree's have also been added, including in the fiddle yard, giving the track entrance some real depth. Plus more rubble and has been added to the Stables/Workshop, including a fallen roof interior. Still lots to be getting on with before the big day at the Weston-Super-Mare Model Railway Show, on Sunday 14th Jan, including fixing more details in place, fitting the layout to it's legs and of course testing!Might see if I can around to weathering some of the stock too, but I don't want to rush anything. Will see...
SDJR7F88
The Trench Railway has now emerged from the dark depths of the loft and it is now standing on it's own two feet (Table Legs). This was the stage I was most worried about, as I was unsure whether or not the layout would fit back down the trap door, yet alone fit in the car (thankfully I tested that too, and it fits a dream)! The Trestle Legs are from Ikea, and were very and easy to build. Sadly they don't follow up, but the height adjusted. With a sight bit of modification, they clap on perfect to the underside of the baseboard. Having the layout in natural light and up to chest height really does bring it all to life (and also highlights a few areas for improvement). Once set-up I continued work by adding a few ferns to the wood, as well as topping up the mud in some places. Think some more figure and item painting is called for next :

rockershovel
That’s a very interesting and well executed layout. A couple of suggestions.. The tracks might be provided with a boarded or corduroy crossing. The tank tracks would destroy the tracks immediately, and it would be an interesting detail. There are some quite alarming looking pictures of field guns being transported on 60cm Gauge transporters! Do you have any rolling stock made up as artillery ammunition carriers? SDJR7F88
One week to go until the Trench Railways first outing!!! As you can imagine I'm a very excited, but a bit worried at the same time, there's plenty to do to the layout, including finishing off the lighting rig, adding a skirt to the baseboards, creating wagon loads, plus painting and sticking down more of the details and figures. I also have to figuring out the best way to safely transport and store the layout, as I don't quite know how it will all fit in the car...I've also been debating about weathering the locos and rolling stock in time for the show, however I thought it might be best if I left that until after the show, with so much else to do I won't want to rush anything like that after putting so much hard work into the layout Luckily I now have a week off to try and get it all in ship shape ready for the big day! If your around on Sunday 14th January, be sure to visit the Weston-Super-Mare Model Train Show and come and say Hi! SDJR7F88
6 Days to go! A Mix Match of things done to the Trench Railway today.First up, testing out the camo net cover for the lighting rig. I must admit I'm in two minds about it, as I'm not sure whether it fits in with the vibe of the layout. Please let me know what you guys think (it was just a £3 purchase, so not to much of a worry if not fitted). All the static grass tufts and poppies are now in place, they certainly bring the layout to life. And then to finish up a spot of paint, priming a number of ammo box, Tent and adding the finishing touches to number of soldiers. More work tomorrow.

SDJR7F88
5 Days to go! Bit of shopping done to day for some last minute items, including some satin black paint for the light cover (resting on top of the lights in the first shot), a plastic storage box (for transporting items and stock to shows) and track rubber. The scenics on the layout are near enough ready for the show, though there will be a few more details and addition at a later date. The Mk1 Tank and Crew are now fixed in places, along with a few other figures. Plus tent has received a touch of weather, and it's guide ropes Thanks ever so much for all the comments on the Camo net cover yesterday, which has been ditched due to popular demand In the process on now cleaning the tracks, hopefully ready for a test run tomorrow. Fingers crossed it all still works after the addition of the mud! Will have to see...
rockershovel
Be prepared for the exhibition organisers to query the fire resistant status of anything draped over the lighting, I certainly would. Are they on a separate frame? Interesting to see the mud on the wheels and tracks, mud tracked up the road, and ruts in the mud. Adds to the sense of it being a whole, integrated scene. What about a card, board or flyers explaining the scenario? I started the thread partway through, and it seemed to me to represent the “100 Days” period - but this is a little-known period in the War and it might save a lot of repetition.. SDJR7F88
A quick look at my WW1 Trench Railway - 009 Scale Exhibition Layout, "Amiens 1918 - Tracks & Trenches". Set during the Battle of Amiens in 1918, this scene depicts a re-captured Artillery Battery, now an Allied field headquarters and supply depot, where Troops and Tanks are prepared, served by a Narrow Gauge Field Railway. Supply trains hauled by a mixture of British, US and French Locomotives, as well as captured German Rolling Stock, stream through the Battery with tons of equipment and material, that will ultimately lead to victory on the Western Front. This video features a compilation showing the layouts development over the past few months. The layout will have it first outing at the Weston-Super-Mare Model Railway Show on Sunday 14th January 2018. If your visiting the show, be sure to come and say Hi, and see the layout on it first outing!
