Study into demand for a Plympton Station, and Ivybridge improvements

Given that the service to Ivybridge originally had a bus link into the town / surrounding areas, one would hope that any proposals would see some more joined up thinking like this (and make the services stay).

Faced with bus competition, probably not worth it.  These days the commuter catchment area between Exeter and Plymouth is slowly melding together as both cities expand and anyone living in that middle area could easily commute to either.  It is really only practical for rail service if residents of the South Hams for instance, decide to take the train but they are well catered for from Paignton and Totnes so any new suburban service would have to contend with scarce pathing and you know how that goes!  Too bad Brent is not there anymore; could have been useful for Middle Earth!

To identify potential sites for a station in the Plympton area and an indication of the likely costs to deliver this station.

Park and ride services work best where access to the city they serve is difficult by car due to the road infrastructure. 

The problem is that the station in Plymouth is a significant trek from the city centre, plus thanks to the Luftwaffe (and 1960s town planners) Plymouth is equipped with a decent road network and has the grade separated A38 dual carriageway providing easy access from the South Hams area. In fact for Most to get to Ivybridge you have to pass across and / or along the A38 anyway.

 

Meanwhile the location of the new Ivybridge station on the edge of the town means it’s not terribly convent for people heading for Ivybridge itself.

 

If Plymouth wants a rail based park and ride solution then it would have been far better served by a station located at Marsh Mills at the edge of the city and right on the A38. However that still doesn’t solve the fundamental issue of the railway stations poor location and a bus based solution may we’ll be more appropriate.

Proposals to reopen Brent station are like those for the 'Bristol Metro' (don't get me started), unfeasible and a triumph (in both cases) of political wishful thinking over reality!

 

An extremely weak aphid has more chance of pulling the skin off a rice pudding that's been left to harden off by having some Araldite hardener spread over the top than these proposals actually becoming reality.

Some consultants got an easy payday, some politicians at election time got to claim to be doing something.

There used to be a sign stating Totnes was twinned with Area 51 Nevada.....
