LONDON ROAD

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN!

post-31973-0-80215700-1498582194_thumb.jpg

After appearing at three exhibitions, in the May 2015 BRM magazine (and as the Layout of the Month on the April 2015 cover DVD), London Road has now been sold.  After finally getting broadband installed, I thought I would take the opportunity to share some of the layout construction with RMWeb

Final track plan, drawn October 2012

After building the boards, track was laid...

Footbridge end  (note 15mm MDF in place for platforms)

London Road bridge end

post-31973-0-18446000-1498582795_thumb.jpg

To work out the width needed for the road bridge, I made a simple mock-up with lanes drawn out on a piece of paper

post-31973-0-68193800-1498582977_thumb.jpg

Brick platform edging from the Wills range was glued to the MDF then Metcalfe slabs were used for the platform tops

and supports glued in place to support the road

JANUARY 2013

Cable trunking is now fitted and ground or post mounted signals (from CR Signals) are also in place

post-31973-0-71142400-1498686633_thumb.jpg

I decided to have a go at scratch-building a signal gantry as it spans four tracks but only needs two signal heads (also from CR Signals) on it

ON YOUR BIKE

The observant RMWebbers may have noticed the retaining wall in the background of the pictures at the end of the previous post.  This was added before I could fit the 'Cycle Hub' (Skaledale Cycle shelters with the resin bases and walls cut off)

post-31973-0-71635700-1498858248_thumb.jpg

of course it needs cycles

The footbridge looks amazing!

Well the whole layout does.

Will the siding to the left on the station approach be joined to another board?

The only reason I ask, is because I am wondering what the sharpest angle is possible on a baseboard joint.

Regards

Cheers  :thankyou:

The track going off to the left, in reality, would go to another platform.  I was limited to 2ft wide boards so couldn't model it

Originally that track and the point etc wasn't there, but the layout lacked something so i added them after.  Here's the original, see what i mean...

  • RMweb Gold

Only just read your signature to see that London Road is the London Road I thought it was! As the pictures developed, it felt just like Midland Station. Very well done.

Remember seeing London Road in BRM and being really excited to see a model of Nottingham station when it was at an exhibition. Saw it in the flesh and for a brief period, felt properly conned with it only being the eastern end. Then I realised how clever it was and thoroughly enjoyed watching it in operation - even if I knew that there weren't 8 or so coaches on the HST that nosed into the platform! I think it really captured the spirit of Nottingham - the pictures in BRM being instantly recognisable.

Cheers guys, glad you liked it and it didn't disappoint!

Modelling Nottingham was always going to be a compromise (having to lose the Bay platform was the reason I called it London Road and not Nottingham)  What I did want, however, was that the people that knew Nottingham Midland would recognise the features on the layout from the real London Road and it sounds like you did.

CANOPIES

The canopies were finished off next and then the buildings were fitted permanently to the platforms.  Here are photos of the canopies still under construction...

Night shots are awesome!

What is the light source you have used as it is very good?

I have used self adhesive LED strips along the footbridge and under each canopy (from Express Models code FLSTPWW30) and the photos were taken with no lights on in the room - Thats it!

Ooh, I like the night shots too.

I am a big fan of the half station, yard etc...it's just hiding the entrance that causes me issues

Yep, same here!

The road bridge is wide enough to hide anything no problem but the footbridge is another story.  The intention was to extend the ballasting and platform edges etc into the fiddleyard so it gave the impression of continuing beyond the footbridge.

I didn't get around to doing it while I had the layout, but it is something that has been started on now with Paul the new owner!
