Formerly known as Project O 1/48th scale Switching layout - now Prime Cereals

Recommended Posts

Test building now moved to right hand side of the layout. This building will have the conveyor structure on it. Established position of the 3 loading bays. Next step produce construct open loading bays, construct a full piece of conveyor and trial construction of a loading bay canopy. Should soak up a few more hours!

Slow Saturday evening on the telly so spent time creating the framework and front valence for the loading canopy. Needs to dry thoroughly before attempting to attach the roof sheeting.

Noticed in some images a simpler type of canopy so mocked up an example.

Both types afixed to building by brackets and wires, metal rods.

3 hours work this morning and does not look a lot to show for it but worked out what does work and what does not. Card will not work for the canopy roof, needs to be curved on both sides for overlapping to look effective. Looks like will have to put windows in the conveyor storey anyway. Mocked up a sample sliding door that occurs on some of the loading docks. This one will be modelled partially open.

  • 2 weeks later...

In order to work out the dimensions of some other parts of the buildings and tanks etc need to build a section of the bridge that goes from the “house” across to the factory. Secondhand stall delivered up two kits of a 4mm overhead walkway but need to scale up to 1/48 th scale.

Morning session will be roofing the canopy. Eating up the supply of sheeting. Trip to London on Tuesday will result in a trip to 4D Models for fresh supplies. At this scale there will have to be some attempt at representing fixings as well.

The first turnout has been built, only 5 more to build.

The switch points, guard rails, frog, rail braces & head rod (tie bar) are all castings from Right-O-Way. The R-O-W castings are high quality with no flash and are beautifully detailed, they are well worth the money.

The tie plates are Grandt line from R-O-W with R-O-W spikes. I made the gauge plates & hook tie plates from 10 thou plasticard as described in Mike Cougill's book "Detailing Track".

Mike's book has been my track building "bible".

The turnout still requires cosmetic rail joiners, these will be added once the turnout is installed on the layout, the plan is to fit cosmetic rail joiners at scale 39 ft lengths.

The sub base road bed is 5 mm "Foamex", a plastic that is strong but soft enough to spike into. I discovered Foamex after one of our other club members used it for a large industrial building on his layout.

Because the ties are only about 1.5 mm thick (coffee stirrer sticks) I had to build on a sub base to allow for the length of the spikes below the ties.

I'm going to have to light that walkway aren't I?

I reckon so. On the basis there are two kits available then it will be two spans wide. If go with the height of the conveyor being establish at 4th storey of the factory building then established the height at which the house will be built up from and the level the walkway will start.

Just time this morning to trial windows and some detailing. The plastic of the window frames does not like glue so it will have to be superglue for attaching window frames etc. For some reason on the real prototype there is a door leading out to a piece of machinery so had a go at mocking up using a 1/48 th scale nato mechanic as reference for dimensions etc.

Have you tried canopy glue?

The window frames are cut from the type of mesh net that needleworkers would use to create their designs, thecsquares I thought would create the glass block design. The plastic seems by feel to be a polythene and quite soapy to touch. Who makes the canopy glue?
