I find this is a great base coat for the layers to come. A bit like painting your base board green brown before you static grass it. I give this several passes and also vary the thickness. For example I notice that on the real thing even with a lot of muck on the red of the buffer beam still shows through a bit. So a thinner layer is on these. I usually put black paint on the roof. But, after looking at pictures of 56s, I am going to give it a miss on this one. The silver paint for steps, buffer shanks, chipped windows I leave right to last. Looks the part now great job well done

Makes a nice comparison to my ex-works version!

SouthernBlue80s
4. Front ends. I tend to treat the front ends first. They need very minimal amounts of powder. The power in various shades of muck colours is painted on using thin washes. Excess is taken back with cotton buds and kitchen paper. I want that knocked back slightly faded look. I treat the first pass as 90 percent done. Then let the photographs show all the imperfections or bits missed. Started on the roof with a wash of darker powder. Progress so far. Still a long way to go. Also to add. I think if you are not into weathering but want your locos to look a bit more realistic then that coat of railmatch frame dirt is a quick way to make them look more work worn. Cheers
SouthernBlue80s
5. Bogies, underside and roof. Knocked back the roof, you can see how the grills are now picked out. Dark blackish weathering powder painted ontop of the framedirt wet and then rubbed back when dry. To give that dried on oil feel. So more detailing need on the roof and bogies. Such as silver on the steps. But they are 90 percent there now. I have yet to go near the sides as that is how I am handling the loco.
SouthernBlue80s
6. Silver on the buffer shanks and the steps. And now painted more weathering powder onto the roof and onto the sides. I did two passes with this and wiped off excess with cotton buds and kitchen paper once dry. So almost finished. Time to put it down and look for the few bits I am not happy with I have spotted a couple. I will revisit it with a fresh pair of eyes in a week. A couple of work in progress shots and one of it finished showing how the detail is picked out.

SouthernBlue80s
Buffer grease on a class 37. I just used to mix paint up but I now put talc powder in for texture.
Fat Controller
I can almost hear my mother saying 'what have you got on the back of your jacket? Looks like grease....' Lovely work.
sb67
Great work Steve, the 56 looks fantastic. I think they are impressive models and the weathering adds some "bulk" to it, looks how I remember them!
SouthernBlue80s
Thanks guys. I revisited 56040 tonight. The sides are a little more heavily weathered than I would like. She is finished. I tweaked a few bits Perhaps in the future I might see if I can remove a bit of grime from the sides. A comparison with lightly weathered 56001 Just spotted 56001 has a shiny wheel. That's the good thing about pictures they show you bits you have missed. SouthernBlue80s
Mucked about with my TTAs. Re did the weathering on them. Still need a tweak here and there. But I am happier with them now. 6

I will be interested to see what the Heljan offering looks like in the flesh. The same goes with 4mm 47s. I want Heljan 47/3s with the plated headcode. But will the cab area be wrong as on their latest O gauge one? Or will Bachmann's be so fiddly that detail bits fall off? It will be interesting to see how they turn out.
