RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted February 22, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 22, 2019 Evening all. Hopefully starting on the ground cover this weekend after a bit of inactivity this week. Updates to follow... Rob 2
RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted February 25, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 25, 2019 Morning to all. The basic ground cover is now completed. Mutton departed from the process on Sheep Lane in that mounting card was used to raise the ground level to the tops of the sleeper, instead of DAS. Bleat returns to using DAS. I find it easier to work on and took the opportunity to embed the buildings by pushing them into the still plyable clay. In addition, I made indents for drain covers and manholes along the way. I suspect that few days will now be needed for the clay to harden off. The track and ground will then be painted with Humbrol acrylics. In the meantime, I may well start detailing the buildings. One project that I am looking forward to is the yard crane. No idea what I will use but there is plenty of choice out there, so not a drama. RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted February 28, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 28, 2019 Morning all. The photo below shows the DAS now in place. Various scenic treatments will be dished out in due course. In answer to the DAS itself, pieces are firstly cut from the block and then rolled out. The resulting 'panels' are cut to size of roughly 6 inches long with width dependent on the gaps between any trackwork. I generally aim for a depth consistent with the top of the sleeper. These panels are laid onto a bed of neat pva. Any joins between panels are smoothed with water and a bit of clay slurry. Any inconsistencies in level or surface add to the character. Any buildings are gently pushed into the soft clay to avoid any gaps between buildings and ground. Some areas will be left smooth and treated as concrete. Others scribed ( not much!) whilst grass and barbarque ash will be added elsewhere. The buildings in the photograph are therefore in their final positions. The square base is that of a yard crane. I have started putting the crane together from the spares box to produce what I hope will be, a fairly typical, small hand crane. Rob. 9 2

RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted March 3, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 3, 2019 Not much to report as of yet.. A work in progress photo of the yard crane and plinth for Bleat. Rob
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted March 3, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 3, 2019 More circular wear needed on the planks, where the operators would have walked/worked. But very nicely done so far.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted March 4, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 4, 2019 That looks like the Wills beasty. Interesting thought Stu, would you make the wear pattern darker or lighter than the base colour of the planking? Al.
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted March 4, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 4, 2019 (edited) Lighter, definitely. And maybe not all the way round, depends where the arc of operation was. Dust & debris will collect where there is no movement, so will look darker. Look at roads, the lines of tyre wear are lighter than the edges or central area and on single track roads the middle bit that never gets used can be quite a lot dirtier. Wood will retain dust and minor growth where it's not disturbed. Edited March 4, 2019 by Stubby47 1

Ah! A meeting of the Devon branch of the Hairy Short Engineers Inspectorate complete with Roger, the mascot. Circa 1910. 1

I strongly suspect the half cab will be a Bleat Wharf regular. Rob
