Plenty of interest coming up in Lidl from Sunday 13th,

First, their Parkside soldering station - £19.99.  48w, "finely adjustable" 200 - 450C temperature range with with three presets, soldering iron and holder with two spare tips, 2 reels of solder and a 3-year warranty.  At that price must be worth consideation though I'd probably be a bit concerned as to availability and range of spare tips.

Secondly, their cordless soldering iron at a mere £6.99.  It claims a temperature range up to 450C.  This might be useful for a prtable or exhibition layout though I think I'd keep a conventional iron at hand just in case....

And finally, their delightful Profi Precision Tool Kit at £5.99.  I've got one and it is really quite classy - 35 pieces including a Magnetic hex head bit holder, Flexible extension (for clockwise use only), Magnifying glass with 2.5x magnification, Stainless steel mini diagonal pliers, Stainless steel tweezers, and 30 S2 steel precision bits, 28mm.  I really love mine!

DT

I'd just say I bought the Parkside soldering iron a few years ago and it is ok for general soldering but I didn't use it that much and it died within a year.

I think the prices of some things went back up and they must have forgot to remove the word BARGAIN.

They were something like £40 a few weeks ago. I did ponder getting one.

I thought I'd try and redeem my 50p thread drifter.

Just when I was going to point out that when the 50p was introduced you could file down a Half-crown to the same shape and make 7/6 profit. Now that's what I call a real bargain.

Old ha'pennies worked well as a substitute for new 2ps in vending machines too, until mechanisms got upgraded/everything was rounded up to 5p....

I hope you took it back and got a refund or replacement under the three-year warranty.  The fact that yours may have died doesn't mean to say that they all will, though it's an obvious truism that you do get what you pay for and £19.99 is extremely cheap for a soldering station (my latest soldering station cost my wife £125 and I expect it to last even though it only has a one year guarantee).

No, I'd travelled some distance to a store specifically for this and other "bargains" and it wasn't worth the time and cost to take it back. Just dismantled it to recover parts and wiring for re-use. Once in bits you can see if it is desgined for occasional use.

Seems to be lower than the average after a quick google,  with some optimistic sellers on ebay hoping for over £150. I bought the same model from Kernow in 2017 for £79.99. Sir Archibald Sinclair is getting towards a better price (a nice to have rather than must have for me).
