Here's another if you like bigger things.

£300 off Heljan Prairie Tanks.

Thanks Jason, but have you ever thought to ask yourself how a retailer can suddenly afford to slash 43% off an item and still be returning a profit?

Clearly someone has been to SCS and thought 'why don't we try that?'...

They've probably sold enough to break even and are now getting rid of stock which is difficult to shift. £300 in the till is better than £600 sitting on the shelf taking up space that could be used for something else. Especially since it's coming up to Christmas.

But SCS don't sell other people's products, Rails do. This is more to do with Heljan's large profit margin rather than it being a con trick by Rails.

Profit margin at most retailers is 100% mark up. Hence the room to play with prices, when they cant sell a item .

No it isn't at its normally more like 50% mark up so after around 33% discount from RRP its a loss. Thats based on experience of working in a model railway shop some years ago

What does happen is suppliers drop their price to shift stock so retailers can buy cheaper and then reduce the price of remaining stock to either break even on what they have left or average out the price across remaining and new stock

Anyway, this place is for bargains not business plans......

Just sayin' :)

Not wishing to stray from the topic - just trying to emphasize the difference between knocked off markup and a bargain. To just suddenly drop 40% off a price is certainly a bargain, but if it was over inflated by that much in the first instance, then is it really a bargain?

Silly Boy !!!!!!!!!!!

I think you will find its Heljan who are in a panic to get rid of them before other new products arrive.  This is good for the customer but a disaster for small retailers who did not even buy them for that price..

Sadly Heljan do not seem to give a toss about small retailers that's why I dont get Heljan anymore.     Charlie

This cheered me up no end.  :lol:

Now we know just why model railway shops are opening up all over the place. Next year we'll be millionaires.....

Maybe if you didn't pay rent, rates, tax, employ people, sit in the dark with no heating and not have any banking facilities only dealing in cash.

Mark up on wholesale (whatever the true percentage is) does not equal profit.

I looked straightaway £86, one has sold and the price has gone up. The usual Amazon thing, especially when a lot of people are looking?

I think the Amazon automatic pricing logarithm kicks in if the item is sitting in an amazon warehouse, being sold by them and is not shifting. So it tends to apply to items where there is little demand or Amazon themselves misdescribe it and few people can find it.

A good example would be something like a inox drill brush made by the German company Pferd. Amazon list whole catalogues of specialist tools. If there are no takers the price starts reducing by circa 4.7% overnight until some buys. In that case it shoots straight back up to retail. If there are no takers it can continue to fall until 1/4 retail is reached then it shoots back to retail. I've observed this with some unpopular binoculars. The next time the process started I got them for £220 not £930 !

This is a rare event though because Amazon UK is linked to the Amazon European sites and well before drastic discounts someone else will buy, particularly if it is known brand name in Europe.

Unfortunately Amazon doesn't seem to stock model trains to any great depth. If you are planning to pick up a Trix Union Pacific Big Boy for £200 you are out of luck...

The other day I came across a business on ebay that was clearly just relisting amazon descriptions word for word complete with mistakes. They have clearly worked out a pricing structure for Ebay, supplied by Amazon that in long run might be profitable.

Hi

I have just received notification from Harburn Hobbies in Edinburgh that are hosting a Peco and Bachmann pre-Christmas promotional event on Friday 8th & Saturday 9th November 2019 (9.30am - 6.00pm both days).

Steve Haynes, Peco's Sales Manager, will be available to answer any questions and he will have a working example of the new Peco turntable motor and the new Peco twist lock point motor for inspection.

There will also be up to 20% off most Peco, Parkside, Bachmann and Graham Farish products (in shop purchases only).  Normally the 20% does not apply to newer models which are still covered by manufacturers’ restrictions on discounts.

There will also be a free prize draw to win Harburn Hobbies Gift Vouchers.

Regards

Roddy

Not a bargain as such, but...

From 7th November, Aldi will be selling a Hornby trainset.

Its the "Intercity Express" set*, previously offered by Argos for £99.99.

Aldi is offering it for £79.99, they will also have a Scalextric set too, at £69.99.

The only disappointment is that the Hornby items will only be available online, and not in store, which would have been a bit more profile-raising for Hornby.

* Railroad level 3 unit Javelin train.

sadly anything on sale in Aldi or Lidl just gets ripped open and destroyed after a day

Did that with a Hornby Ince castle a few years ago - it got down to £75 before my finger twitched!

Great, thanks for that.......wasn’t going to buy any more Locos until my layout is at least running, especially large kettles......but for that price, it is a bargain.

Sorry - couldn't resist!

Not such a daft question, there seem to be plenty of things that cost more a pound in there.

As for the 99p shop, guess who bought and then closed that.

Correct. They were selling big electric heaters in the Birmingham branch last year for about £50.

The young lad did laugh when we offered him a £1 for one. He'd probably not heard that one before.   ;)
