The MDV progresses. I wanted to up cycle a big train underframe.
To aid running I drilled out the axleguards to take brass bearings. Then trimmed off the outer flanges of the big train solebars to fit between dummy solebars cemented to the body assembly.
A few plasticard shims set the buffer height.

The underframe is secured with 2 screws.

Next the headstocks need to be cut and fitted.

May I ask a question which involves thinking back a bit?

I’d like to build a couple of BR steel Highs (based on the Slaters kit) but with the LNER type clasp brake gear. I think you did this conversion for your Shock High using bits from your bits box, but sadly my bits box is not so well endowed!

Do the Parkside LNER van kits contain the right parts? And/or are you aware of any other available sources of LNER clasp brake gear parts?

Many thanks,

Mol

Ive done a LNER clasp brake steel high using odds and ends of styrene strip and an etch that CRT kits sell that has brakegear parts on it. They also do an etch for Vee hangers or use Parkside ones. Sorry for jumping in Ernie

Many thanks, that’s a good tip. I’ll look at the CRT kits range.

I don’t really want to buy a whole van kit just for the brake gear!

I've toyed with doing the same variation and wondered if J and M Hughes might have parts as I have a feeling they do that wagon.

Parkside used to sell individual sprues which was perfect for this sort of thing.

I had a look through the J&M Models gallery (and his thread on here) but couldn't see any wagons with LNER clasp brake gear, unfortunately.

Connoisseur Models do several etched kits with this type of brake gear, all on wooden underframe vehicles. However, Jim's excellent policy of illustrating the instructions and parts list on the website shows that the brake v-hanger parts are integrated into the etch for the wagon body, and probably could not be easily supplied separately:

I have not yet found a single 7mm scale kit by any manufacturer which includes a 10' wheelbase steel underframe with LNER clasp brake gear! This is turning out to be more difficult than I thought.

I can supply the 10’ wb LNER clasp underframe parts as these pics for example. I haven’t done the linkage bar for the other length wb’s but that’s no problem to do
