“Highland Sulzers” - Inverness TMD in the 80's - P4

Like last night I’ve been searching for photographs of locos that were based at IS in 83 and again more specifically ones I spotted. Tonight I’ve been looking at 47s with not so much success. Most shots being out of period and in Large Logo livery.

However I did turn up this little gem which amongst other things is a good reference shot for the refuelling area.

I’ve still not worked out what all the pipes do and what would be under the shelter. If anyone understands these things I’d appreciate your wisdom on such matters.

There is fuel, lub oil and coolant hoses visible (provided they use the same connectors nowadays). In the early 80s then there would also be a water supply for the loco boilers.

These days we have various other things in the fuel bay such as AdBlue for the Zoomers. We also now have the CET pumps.

That’s a great help.

If you don’t mind, can I ask which is which?

Just had a look at that.

They’ve done a lot of really good stuff over the years - I get their FB updates. Really respect the engineering effort that goes into all their projects.

This a gas torch. I’m sure you properly know this. After some subtle prodding from Geoff and Mark I’ve bitten the bullet and bought one.

This is in order to silver solder the droppers to switchblades for the points.

The silver solder has also arrived in a syringe.

I’ve not done this before....

Oh and you need a microscope to read the instructions...

I’ve had a couple of goes at silver soldering the dropper wire to a rail today.

Heres a picture.

Not the prettiest - in the wrong place etc, but I’ll get better once I’ve worked a good way of clamping things in place.

However, it’s an incredibly strong joint!

Quite pleased.

Looking good.  I've not had much chance to do any more with mine, but defo think some sort of jig to keep everything in the right position would help

I’ve just had a fiddle around and have come up with the following (slightly unorthodox I know...)

The sprung wire is, well, fiendishly springy so I had to put it in its syringe tube to calm it down a bit.
