Bachmann J72

Further to my comments earlier, one thing which appears to have been overlooked in conversions from long to short bunker is that the first twenty engines (those with short bunkers) were fitted with steel plate buffer beams (front and back). In most cases the front beam had a wooden baulk and  an  extra steel plate added (the footplate was not extended). The rear rarely (if ever) had this change and retained the steel plate throughout the lives. The Newcastle pilot was in this condition as 68680 in its final days.

That means a hunk of plastic to remove whilst leaving the footplate intact!

I have just got home. I’ve purchased one of the early BR examples from Monk Bar Models in York. I can only say just how superb the model is, and it’s light years ahead of the old Mainline model - very nice though it was back in the late seventies.

So here’s some photo’s which I have taken of 68733. I hope you will find them of some use.

The lamps and three link couplings are in the bag of parts in the usual way.

Best regards,

I cannot wait to see the LNER example now... :)

68674 had a composite rear buffer beam.

One thing we've never manage to work out is how many of the first 20 were converted to asymmetric pulls on the brake gear.

Nice of them to accommodate LMS modellers - 68733 was allocated to a couple of 66 district sheds towards the end. Others were allocated to 66 district sheds, plus at least one in 67 district.

Anyone got one yet? Seem to be in stock in several dealers now

Oddly, the LNER one is the only one that has been showing on the "latest arrivals" page on Bachmann's website, and it's been there for more than 10 days, but has not reached any retailers yet. On the other hand, Bachmann don't show the early BR one as having arrived, but retailers have had it for about 4 days. I haven't bought any Bachmann for years so I'm not sure what their system is, but I seem to remember when the J36 came out, it was about 4 days from in stock at Hornby to on sale at retailers.

I see that all three black ones are now shown in the "latest arrivals" on the Bachmann site so hopefully they will get them all out in time for Christmas.

The green one, still outstanding,  makes me sorely tempted just for its sheer attractiveness even though I know it is wrong. I think different numberplates  and a Ramsbottom safety valve cover (from where?) could make me forget the length difference.  Whether they will arrive before Christmas is another matter as it's getting very close.

Porcy,

It's interesting that they've got the shape of the middle brake table right (it's different from the other two), when it won't be seen unless the model is held upside down.

Has anyone installed a decoder - and if so which one?

Thanks

Chris

I don't have a J72 yet (apparently one will appear under the tree in 10 days time) but I'd go for the Bachmann 36-567. It's made by Zimo, and I have one in my DCC ready V3. It's lower priced than Zimo, same excellent running quality.

For sound installs the Zimo MX659N18 would be my choice. Slightly smaller than the ESU alternative.

The Bachmann model numbers look big ,compared to the BR Crest in the photo above.

The exact oppositte appears to be in the link below

Lovely looking little model.

Are those numerals correctly dimensioned - almost looks like O Gauge numerals have been used ?

I know it would be highly unusual for Bachmann to make that kind of error but they look HUGE!

Al.

They are also in the wrong location.:D

Going by photos it appears that Bachmann have done some excellent research.

I just wait to see a brave purchaser add a couple of deep grooves to the side tanks on the NE area version.

Maybe correct height but a little too fat/thick  (overweight to use a computer font term) perhaps?

Shows that things have progressed though, when we are crabbing about the "look" of a typescript and the colour of the cab floor planking.

Very nice , but why do they keeping painting Wood "Teak" brown?

The generally accepted 'code colour' representing 'wood' is a mid-brown. (As an inspection of any drawings at a nursery school will confirm.)

Your proposed 'ingrained' grey filth, largely coal dust, soot and ash, would be a much better finish for sure.
