CazRail
Not much to update on, just further work to scenery. This evening i glued some more tall grass along the lake shore, and added to the bushes. Afterwards, I decided to pose a nuclear flask train on part of the layout. I've been running my Heljan class 33 in EWS livery with two EWS livery hoppers and a brake van. I can see this being a regular runner on this layout as a bit of a 'what could/could have been' scenario. Dare I say it, a "cute" little train... RMweb Premium DLT Posted November 29, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 29, 2018 Very nice indeed Caz, although I'm not sure "cute" and "nuclear flask" would often go together....

CazRail
Not a huge amount to update with, just plodding on with the scenics as and when finds allow. So to showcase my work this week, I've posed my Limby 31296 'Tren Nwyddau Amlwch / Amlwch Freighter' with a pair of my (ok, unprototypically EWS examples!) Seacows as if they were taking the leisurely-paced run back towards Gaerwen after dropping some fresh ballast north of Llannerch-y-medd... And then a photo from Harry from the terrible trio of Tom, Dick and Harry, taken from the footbridge, which I still need to build... My usual technique was employed for the scenery at the front of the track, plonking bushed where I think they'd be, then using pieces of Heki wildgrass to blend it all together.
CazRail
Some slight progress tonight in the way of... trees! I bought a box of seafoam trees, and to be honest, they look good as they are! Of course Ill be using some scatter/flock to make them green, for which I will try 3M Spraymount as an adhesive. Here's how the raw product looks... This is where my desicion to use only polystyrene with no hard cover to it. A simple hole poked with a cocktail stick is sufficient to hold them dry, easy to re-locate or swap about the trees if in not happy, and if i decide to permenantly have the trees in, fill the hole with glue and plonk the tree in!
CazRail
Happy New Year everyone! So the first bit of progress this year, is to tone down the ballast on the trackwork. This was done using the 'New Junction' method from YouTube, as I don't currently have a compressor for my airbrush. The jist of it is, using Acrylic Railmatch Sleeper Grime, use a brush to sparingly coat the ballast with it, leaving me with a subtle hint of weathering of the ballast. I plan to so some more to it using blacks and more browns later on. Here's a link to the YouTube video...

CazRail
Earlier this evening, decided to have a play to see how the Octel tanks could have been should they have continued to use rail after 1993... Naturally by the 21st century, the brake vans and barrier wagons had been dropped from the formations. And then maybe into DB Schenker era...? And they might have lost the contract to a competitor..? Also this evening, I discovered Lima had made some tank wagons very similar to the TTA/TTB vehicles used on the Amlwch-Ellesmere Port trains. Might try to get a couple and make them into Octel tanks... Edited February 8, 2019 by CazRail
RMweb Gold holywell junction Posted February 9, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 9, 2019 Really good effort. This part of the world is very dear to me. I once made some approximations of the steam age Octel tanks from old Lima models. I can bung some images on here tomorrow if interested. I have seen scratch built examples on here that were very well researched and excellent models some years ago but time and limited skills meant I took cheat route! Kept me happy!

Thanks for the comment. That would be very useful! I bought a Bachmann 2mt tank especially for this layout so i could operate it in 50s/60s, but as you see from the photos, this is a representation of the line where 'rule 1' is firmly applied. I kitbashed the two chlorine tanks with bits from my 'box of things' and a couple of cheap old wagons from ebay, and created the transfers myself
CazRail
Put the layout together in it's entirety this morning, to check that all is well and just to have a little play. It's only the second ever time it's been together in full, board 4 didn't have anything but base layer of polystyrene land-form and the track back then! Thought up a little scenario in my head, where an EWS class 66 failed on the return of the morning tanks, with only two tanks in tow. Freightliner 66522 was on the Penmaenmawr ballast on this day, and was sent to assist the train the Llandudno Junction, before returning to it's own train... Just a little fun on a Saturday morning 6
RMweb Gold holywell junction Posted February 9, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 9, 2019 The water is superb! It looks really good. I've just remembered the Lima wagons I used to make Octel Tanks - Old Gulf Oil models (ebay for a couple of quid!) Anyway here's a couple of photos, I did say that they were rushed but if time had been available, I'm sure they would have turned out a lot better. If you want copies of the Octel Logos, message me and I'll get a copy of the file to you and just print your own.

RMweb Gold holywell junction Posted February 10, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 10, 2019 Sorry - I believe it may be a power plant! Anyway Caz, you are very generous but I know they are a bit naff and not very close to the originals!! I've attached the Octel Logos should anyone want to use them, just trim them to shape..... It's a pdf so you may have to experiment a bit with scale, but useful nonetheless. octel logo only.pdf

I've managed to source a couple of the Lima wagons. They're fairly tatty, but they'll receive a coat of paint and new wheels and they'll be good as new! As far as I know, Amlwch received suphur from Mostyn(until 1989) and Liquid Chlorine, and despatched Ethylene Dibromide to Ellesmere Port and the occasional load of straight Bromine to mainland Europe. The tanks for the Bromine were European type, so I wonder if any HO manufacturers make something similar...
RMweb Gold holywell junction Posted February 11, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 11, 2019 D'you know, somewhere in my attic, I think that I have a limp of that sulphur! CazRail
Had an hour this morning so decided to finish applying decals to my Lima tank... This tanker was originally in Shell yellow with red branding. I've gone down the Liquid Chlorine route again with these wagons, so I re-sprayed into White using a Halfords aerosol, and applied my own decals. You can see holywell junction's versions above in a previous post. Another job I got round to during the week was to re-do the wing fences on the bridge. The originals, although better than nothing, were rather crude and badly painted on my part, so decided to make newer and finer ones. The posts are 1.5mm evergreen square rod, the rails are 20thou plasticard sheet cut to size, and the ballast boards are 0.75x2mm strip. They were then painted in Railmatch Sleeper Grime. On the right is the new wing fence, the old on the right. All four corners of the bridge have been similarly treated. 5
RMweb Gold holywell junction Posted February 25, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 25, 2019 Afternoon Caz, the tanks posted earlier look tremendous with excellent decals. The fences are much improved too. Good job you only had to do wing rails, I could imagine a long fence run could get pretty tedious!! Looks great.

CazRail
So it's one month until show-time, the layout appearing at Anglesey Model and Collections Show. So here's a checklist of jobs for the next four weeks. Finish reeds along lake shore. Resolve any imperfections in land form. Finish and tidy up post and wire fences Sort wiring detect on board 4 Build fiddle yard boards Make a 'maintenance kit'
