Stanier Moguls at Bristol.

Yes, but I'd have to go through the Archive (tomorrow!) to get some of the numbers. There was a regular job for this class and others: a Fitted Derby - Bristol and return, and was usually covered by a Crewe South loco.

While not an every day occurrence, I believe we have sighting for at least half the class there.

According to the RCTS book on the Hughes, and Stanier 2-6-0's, the Staniers were often seen in Bristol, and Bath Green Park where on Summers Saturdays they could be seen on Bournemouth holiday trains running via the S&DJR, sightings included the 'Pines', although it was rare for them to continue south of Bath. Although one conclusion I would make is that Saltley could be overstretched with supplying loco changes at Brum N/S, and called on the other sheds in the area for help, as a few of Aston's, and Bescot's allocation would turn up, at times, in Bristol, and Bath. Can't remember who, but one of the members on this forum used to have a link on his signature to a list of loco sightings on the Birmingham to Bristol main line in the early 1960's, I remember there were quite a few of the afore mentioned locos on there.

Sort of Phil, it was a while ago that I noticed it, but not so sure. But I see your 'location' of Abbotswood Junction ( is that the Worcester 'bypass' ?), that rings a bell of the actual sighting location - or am I imagining things.

Certainly is the by pass Paul - never heard anyone else call it that but that was how we knew the line in our youth!

Now theres always this ... hee hee

But a sighting between Brum and south of Gloucester is no guarantee that the loco went to Bristol - could have been a Bath working via Mangotsfield of course as documented on SMF web site

Excellent!! Many thanks.

I wasn't aware of them going to Green Park, that's why I asked for Bristol. But at least I have an excuse for a 'borrowed' loco on the S&D. And I don't have to renumber.

BGP shed had a reputation of 'borrowing' locos to substitute for failures, and shortfalls going south during summer Saturdays, but most times it would be a Saltley loco, I think there was an understanding between the two sheds. :sungum:

Can I just add that there are no sightings of a Stanier Crab on the S&D. That doesn't mean that one never went there, of course, only that it wasn't seen

Actually I do have photographic evidence in one of my books of a Crab quite far south on the S&D, somewhere around Sturminster Newton I think, albeit in LMS days/late 40's I think. There was also a reference to their increased use over the line particularly during the war period.

I haven't however seen a picture of Stanier mogul on the S&D however, perhaps at BGP though.

Having done quite a bit of research on Bristol Barrow Road as i'm involved with a P4 model under construction, there is certainly a few pics of a Stanier mogul out the back by the workshop, judging by the comments above I'd assume that this was indeed 2974.

Best Wishes

Paul

I think you're talking of Horwich Crabs on the S&D, and they were trialled there first in 1927 but it was about 10 years later that they became regulars at Green Park. The problem prior to that was the bridge restrictions between Bath and Mangotsfield, and even after this there was a speed restriction down to 15mph over Bridges Nos. 19 and 24.

If you have any evidence of Stanier Crabs on the S&D, I'd love to hear from you!

January 24, 1963 was at the height of the big freeze.  I remember 42979 backing down from Barrow Road onto the 7.25 p.m. Newcastle, one hour late.

There was simply no available motive power for this train which was the heaviest train of the day, including the mail stock.

42974 was stuck a the back of Barrow Road under repair for what seemed a long period, but may only have been 3-4 weeks.

Four of the class were allocated to Bescot in the mid-1960's, 42957/74/75/79, and they would have been the more common visitors to Bristol

Was there any reason why Crabs were not widely used on the Somerset & Dorset?

They certainly turned up at Bath on a regular basis.  Given that Bath Green Park had quite a reputation for 'borrowing' loco's I assume that there must have been a reason as most types seemed to have appeared on the line at some stage if not banned for weight/clearance reasons
