Wantage Road 1880 4mm Broad Gauge

With all the carriages I did in 3d over the past few months, I got a bit 'meh' with cad and couldn't get the 'mojo' to get back into it. This week though, during the evening soaps, I've done a bit for a new figure.

It's partly based on this tutorial

which is different to the last one I used (though I couldn't work out what he does at one point so had to guess and he's using a different version of blender as well), I also used these photos here

http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/victorians/victorian_mugshots_gallery_08.shtml

You need a good side on and front picture and this is pretty near. Anyway I took a few screenshots as I did it.

shot1.png.045f19d8f1645b48a7498e493c98b2c5.png

trace round the outlines in the front dimension, I added an extra layer for his 'tache. On the right picture the 2 faces don't line up; right forward face is higher than side on, so I cut and pasted the photo a bit.

shot2.png.787150330bf5504a540e0c2ac545140e.png

bit more then spread out, note the face isn't exactly straight on. I activated the mirror function, which basically copies/mirrors what you do so you only do the right half. Saves exactly lining up etc, though you can do just half a head then mirror the whole thing after (which is what I did last time)

1397165293_shot3.png.55810fc0fceda9a50f720aa00ce086ad.png

basic face done on left , so start pulling points across on the right picture to fill it out in 3d

1280934275_shot4.png.9caeebe48bbfbf02e7011a2ae0095e98.png

This was the first stab, but some points need moving further across as most faces are fairly flat if you take the nose off

shot5.png.0fe774693231427c9597007d5c0535a2.png

second stab but still not quite right. It looks really blocky, but it will be autosmoothed and a head in 4mm scale is only 2mm or so across so the printing will smooth it out as well.

shot6.png.3c3d745d7d1711ffaf9ddad868ea75b4.png

shot8.png.a598fd917b7f3a79b3f88629a8b89d82.png

skipped a bit here but most of head done and start of ear

shot9.png.6adb7feda1f33fb047b46fe55a440990.png

bottom lip

shot10.png.38f59d61e08927992d546546cd3ca82f.png

sphere for an eye (looks a bit alienish) the mirror function doubles the eye, I then squashed it slightly in the z direction and resized to roughly fit the socket.

shot11.png.e1e3673562f885365c0c7d917b5b99b9.png

Very rough ear.

I'll tart it up a little bit tonight and 3d print over the weekend. I may or may not get time to do the hat as well. Obviously he'll need a body as well, but I'll try to amend the previous body I did rather than start a new one as that took a few weeks to do.

Did a basic hat

shot13.png.232b5d3f5c59e76e90fe680ea528814b.png

traced the outline again, the squashed/stretched half sphere above the head was to try and help with forming the shape

shot14.png.137b3a4b32e7a82efc931ae3fcb9b2d7.png

stretched the tracing over a few times, each time reducing it a bit in size and lowering it

shot15.png.abc89728616095d1864bbf4a0b277f53.png

checked for fit and dropped it more towards the ears

shot16.png.2c42271f2487c21dba91ea0a3a193950.png

All done, it's not as flat as a proper flat cap, but I think it will pass. I 3d printed 12 of them (they're tiny so did more than I'll ever need),

20191207_151820_Richtone(HDR).jpg.ae9cc485a688261c5c1f7e4a963cdac9.jpg

but light isn't good in spare room for close up shots on my phone, so I'll put it under a spotlight tomorrow.

Spotlight still wasn't enough to get a decent close up photo.

20191208_142712.jpg.a151797c9e4cac1df5c9bc1c4a5c7a88.jpg

the fourth one is sort of in focus

Other bits done in past few days

20191208_104610.jpg.3a6c97e82f3f202c4044d6632bf54e3e.jpg

Smokebox and part of firebox soldered to the body (holyhead Prince Albert), frames soldered together (riveted on both sides as part of the inside will be visible), laminated coupling rod that I've messed up by drilling off centre, and frames for a standard gauge 2-4-0. The broad gauge chassis frames for the Hawthorn are drilled through, but I forgot to take photo. I didn't manage to get to the shop for nuts to fix the squareomiser, will definitely go there this week. Just waiting on xmas and the money to buy gearboxes and more wheels. I still can't get the motorised tender to run as well as it did before I added suspension and pickups, I'll keep fiddling with it.

Did bits and bobs on various bits this week, I took photos every other day or thereabouts

20191210_091207.jpg.d990c7d3f7c8b2911cfb1487598c7789.jpg

standard gauge 2-4-0 frames being drilled, bits of plasticard stuck together, and frame spacers for the hawthorn marked out

20191211_072608.jpg.0874088dfed17bed25ba6d7f644be9d8.jpg

squareomiser now fixed and ready to go, platicard bits smoothed a bit

20191212_092451.jpg.f2b7560f423f47c46c1f69803170b2ba.jpg

Rover frames in the squareomiser, plasticard strip being glued to the plasticard smoothed lump, second set of prince albert frames roughly cut, and check on motors for albert. I was going to use an N20 with gearbox (right) and bevel gears (on way from china), but the gearbox doesn't fit in the boiler. It' s very close to fitting, but but even filing it down wouldn't work as some of the gears are too near the edge. An N20 on its own fits (as modelled above), and I've got a few more with worms...

20191212_130854.jpg.3afcb61f0d9e79d4963f54d40e98ca28.jpg

the pcb bit will just chop off, but I'm not sure if it will match any gears I've got. Also, due to an admin error, the boiler is a bit too long so am taking about 3mm off the second part.

20191214_091122.jpg.a633c46273ae27644d4900c2ec09fca3.jpg

more plasticard strip around the plasticard, not sure if that's going to work or not now though. In the middle are the Hawthorn frames which I forgot to take a pic of last week.

20191215_112514.jpg.7ae64e25576e591e40ba7f6f5443e7bf.jpg

Soldered the rover frames and 'wobbler unit', also did the firebox wraparound on prince Albert, but it didn't go on straight. I managed to resolder it earlier without ruining the whole thing, no pic yet, it's better but not perfect. Don't know whether I'll have another go at it or leave it as is now.

I've packed the 3d printer away for xmas as we'll need the spare room over the break for relatives and, to be honest, the un/part cured resin stinks and is possibly not that healthy to sleep next too.

20191217_144244.jpg.351569e245b61fc04ff3357a2dcc0b73.jpg

These were the last bits done over the past few months; a carriage can't remember diagram but it has flat ends (no end tumblehome), few more tenders, selection of springs grease axleboxes and that for the rover, the first attempt at them that part failed due to a powercut, brakes, more axleboxes, and a track gauge to help with broad gauge laying.

20191217_144419.jpg.3d5cac8f620b216604018b6b1888db9f.jpg

Above is just over half the waste so far from the printer (bases, support etc). I've kept it as I keep thinking it must come in handy somehow for something, but no use has been found yet. A few people have asked about 3d stuff (mainly broad gauge), as I'm not using the printer much for myself anymore, I might look into doing it properly in the new year. However, in the short term, there's a mountain of cheese, sprouts and turkey to get through.

What a treasure trove of prints you have by now. The track gauge looks handy.

It's a shame about the waste. Is it possible to design the prints to reduce it, or is it simply a necessary feature of current printing technologies?

Thanks Mikkel.

I'm trying to print things as flat as possible to avoid the waste, but the quality is better with an angle. The thick bases are unavoidable, if they're too thin it won't stick properly to the build base.

I'm going to try using the bases to pack out the cess between the tracks before ballasting. I'll use less ballast that way.

Little bit of soldering yesterday,

20191221_100105.jpg.5a0e33367eb1ed5fa9a997f4bc18c5e0.jpg

Did the cab side beading for the rover, though now I've taken a photograph I can see daylight through it so I'll have another go. Laminated some more strips of nickle silver, and the second frame for prince Albert. Managed to drop prince albert and it obviously landed on the piece that wasn't protected so the front needs bending back to shape. I've also made a start on cutting up and filing down rail. I'm a long way off baseboard number two and the turnout that involves, but it doesn't hurt to start getting the bits ready.

Most of the toys and tools are packed away for xmas. However, I started on a mock up of the bridge in cardboard this morning before going to the allotment to pick sprouts and dig parnips. The only pic today is of this motley crew at the annual Wantage Road station carol singing evening.

A couple of bits from santa.

20191226_100744.jpg.ce0317f67f5cdeac04329996c6f998f6.jpg

A brace of olfa cutters thanks to an amazon admin error, more tiny drill bits to break and an Adrian Vaughan book. Also in the middle is the firebox support for prince albert that I soldered Xmas eve.

20191226_100814.jpg.550e7a207567ce2b80102568621eb3a9.jpg

And an airbrush . Hopefully I'll get to play with it Sunday and spray some of the carriage sides.

Have a good break.

Didn't get to play with the new toy today, just not enough time.

20191228_135658.jpg.dd2d13be9924cc07b142ca16405e98fd.jpg

I did manage to get the lid off the paint, with an adjustable spanner. I've got some empty little pickle jars so I'll store it in that instead.

The bridge mock up. As it crosses the line on an angle, I couldn't work out if the dimensions from the drawing in BRJ17 were from a right angle to the bridge or from the line looking through the bridge. I've worked it out now (the latter), and have some thin ply that I'll use for the basic structure, with brick plasticard stuck on. I still need to get the proper angles for the arches, and work out height to platform and get it to meet the station building etc.

I've put off doing any work on the baseboard recently as I thought we'd be moving quicker than it seems we are. So I hope to start work on it again in the new year. The station building itself needs a lot more work doing, possibly repainting too, and the platform needs finishing etc. Plenty to keep me busy.

If I half close my eyes I can imagine a gleaming BG loco emerging into the sunlight from under the bridge.

Best wishes for the new year Charlie.

Thanks, Mikkel. Hopefully in the next year  (or two or three ) I'll have the Rover thundering under the bridge.

Have a good new year too.

Another hint for getting the lid off those pots is to boil a kettle and pour enough hot water into a cup so that the lid is almost covered when put in up side down. The plastic expands more than the cooler glass and loosens the lid, I have found this works in most cases.

best wishes

Simon

Thanks bridgisimon. I tried holding it under the hot tap a month or two back, but it didn't budge so I guess it probably never got hot enough.

I guess I'll have the same problem eventually in the little jar it's now in, that has a metal screw top though so will hopefully be more removable with storing upside down and placing in boiling water.

Due to the rather mild weather the past week, not much got done over the hols. Still haven't tested the airbrush yet. I don't know how long it will take to set it up, have a decent play and then clean it afterwards. I'm guessing a rainy/snowy Sunday will be the best time for a first go, but I'm obviously itching to give it a try.

Not the best picture, but the top layer for the platform is ready to be glued and screwed (in upper half of photo). There's about 0.5mm left for the top surface which I guess is compacted fine stone / macadam (though I'm not sure when that was first used without googling) and a stone edge

platform.png.4993e2db92b9b214f5838c2d796560cd.png

Badly cropped scan of a photo etc, but the stone edge appears to be about twice the length of a Victorian railwayman's ares to knee. About 3-4ft?

20200105_154550.jpg.320e1fabfd2e9aa92f68aacb3038bef5.jpg

Bit more soldering of chassisses. The hawthorn is in the squareomiser with the rover on the right. As mentioned a month or so ago, I'll be ordering some high level gearboxes for these, I just need to check the templates against the drawing / 3d print to get the right gearbox.

That was it. I'll try to keep going with the platform and then the bridge while also attempting to get something running.
