RHTT 2017

Recommended Posts

It seems that Stowmarket has a good selection of locos allocated to RHTT this year - I just need to find if and when they allocate something other than class 66s to the daytime Shenfield/Southend runs.  By contrast, the Broxbourne RHTTs again appear to be the sole preserve of 66/7s.  Last week I "discovered" Royston - a friendly station, where the Broxbourne RHTT set conveniently reverses in a siding opposite the platform.

Having been bowled by late running earlier in the week, there was some compensation in catching the London Underground Rail Adhesion Train (sort of similar to RHTT) making a reversal at Woodford.

So, didn't a Sandite train slip to stand today?

One of ours came to a stand on tallerddig last week but managed to get moving again with a bit of ballast on the track

This year seems particularly bad for low adhesion, even with normal weighty freight trains that don't tend to suffer

A couple from yesterday.

First up, one of the Stowmarket sets, top and tailed by 66424 and 66421, passing through Ingatestone before reversing at Shenfield and heading for Southend Victoria.  For some reason these runs are routinely shown as cancelled on Realtime Trains.

Disappointing that it was 66s when Stowmarket has 37s and 57s available.  But I missed the real excitement on Saturday, when a similar working was entrusted to a pair of 57s - and diverted to the rescue of a double 66-headed freight.  Two trains with four locomotives combined as a single working!  I'm sure someone will have a picture of it in one of the contemporary magazines next month (images already available on-line, I gather).

Here's the Harringey RHTT set at Foxton, where the train reverses, ignores the facing cross-over and runs "wrong line" back towards Shepreth.  DBS liveried 66009 has had a bit of a face-wash, EWS-liveried 66174 on the other end not so fortunate.

This morning's excitement at Brighton.  It's been top and tail 73's all this week except today:

Yesterday's Gloucester Horton Road RHTT got into difficulties.  It has been in the hands of Colas 66s Nos. 66846 and 66848.  Apparently, 66846 failed very early in the route and the set was taken back to Gloucester Horton Road.  56078 was put on and the train recommenced, completing most or all of the route in darkness.  Almost a reverse of last year's RHTT, when the original 56s were replaced by 66s.

Here it is a week ago, running slightly early, with the extremely grubby 66s.  Does dirt getting into air vents and intakes on the locomotives contribute to failures?

I’m on that RHTT set this Sunday, conducting it Hereford to shrewsbury and back, (Sunday is the only day it visits shrewsbury)

66s are pretty well sealed from getting crud in the engine bay, it does however get everywhere, I go through 3 jackets a season if I’m on the cannon enough!

On a more somber note, a guy running from the police climbed on an RHTT in the parcel platform at Preston Station on Tuesday (30th) and got himself electrocuted

OT from RHTT.

There is clear CCTV footage of said person trying to evade police.

Nice to have Russ on a pair of 37's on the 3S50 circuit for a couple days, nice to see real locos down our bit of railway, and to here that lovely EE sound....
