In the interest of making it easier to follow a specific project and provide feedback, I've separated the threads for each of our O Gauge projects.

Ooh look at that, the casing correctly follows the cylinder radius, and as a result the O gauge model looks just that bit more A4ish than the OO model posed alongside. Some interesting tooling decisions to be made to allow this feature to appear on the production model.

I think you need to check out the posts in the original Topic Hattons  A3 and A4 to see the comments re the O gauge A4 casing

I think it would be helpful if some kind mod, or the OP's could copy and paste their original comments about the A4 over to this thread.

Otherwise we run the risk of them being lost...and forgotten. The front views are pretty much the ones I'm talking about.....

Hi all,

Following on from previous amendments noted (including some from this thread) we've now received the latest revised CAD files for the A4 body shell.

Well to my eye the front end on profile looks much improved. Perhaps group member Giles can do a similar comparison to that which he produced for the previous Hatton A3 A4 topic The chimney now has a more accurate two step profile down to the firebox casing

This is MILES better. The narrowing of the nose appears to be so much better!! Congratulations!

The side elevation could still do with a little tweak if you can. In side elevation, the nose could perhaps do with being a little bit more elliptical at the pointy end - with the radius point just above the buffers?
The side casing has the complex collection of multiple radii, which leaves you with a definite 'panel' on the adjacent nose. The issue is confused with the versions carrying the valence, as that appears to have a radiused end on the panel which doesn't reflect the side casing.

The smokebox door flap should be hinged a little higher up, I think - about the same height as the hand-rails.

The version shown is of course the single chimney, and the double chimney (for most of the types listed) is larger.

With a bit of luck this will set the benchmark for A4s..?

Difficult comparison this one. I have layered the Hatton's render over one of Rob Pulham's photos and changed the predominently black render to a shade of green. It looks a pretty good match to me.

The smokebox door cover could do with being slightly more radiused and the side skirts reprofiled a bit, but looking good.

Blown away by Hattons response to constructive comments, not something we are used to these days. I placed my order when the A4 was announced and was a bit disheartened when the first cad pics came out due to the shape but my order is 100% staying put this model is just getting better by the week. I find it very interesting that defining a shape such as the A4 is so difficult even with the benefit of cad when the real thing was put together by hand or chalked out on a workshop floor, just goes to show how much engineering has changed in the last 80 years. I hope the model sells well and we have more options perhaps name and numberless available in the future.

That is exactly my thoughts. Not a model for me (wrong scale and era) but I almost wish it was just to thank Hattons for the sheer amount of effort they are putting into this.

A role model for future developments I think and, indeed, a hard one to follow.

An excellent rendition! Brilliant!

Indeed it shows how well Hattons are doing - and I too think it's great - and a great example - that they are being so very positive about this!!!

It does show that it's down to the final details.

The ambiguity after the valence curve is the biggie outstanding from this comparison, although it also shows the side casing front radius differences.

Hello all,

Following on from the corrections and great feedback we've received previously, we now have a new version for the nose end of the A4.

We're happy with the look and feel of the streamlined casing and we're incredibly glad we've taken the time to get this right. Thank you to everyone who has been involved so far.

Anyway, take a look at the images below and let us know what you think.

Dave,

I wont be having an A4, as it's too big for my short layout, nevertheless, I applaud you and your team for listening to fellow modelers and making amendments to make the loco look right.  I wish others producers would take a leaf out of your book and do the same.

I wish you every success with the A4 etc. and future productions.

Regards, Mick.

PS. Looking forward to receiving my 7mm Warwells in the New Year.

A quick look at the latest rendition suggests to me that the elusive look of a streak head on has eluded you again. To me the first revision captures the look a lot better than this. Perhaps more knowledgable people would like to add their comments.

Bob

Agree although very difficult to tell from photos when you have no idea what distortion the camera has produced. The front on shot looks slightly more refined, the 3/4 view makes it look like it has been eating a lot of pies since we last saw it!

Morning all,

I've got a few more photos of the new 3D sample which will hopefully show the dimensions and and shapes a little better than the previous ones.

The dimensions of this new sample now match the three locomotives that we were lucky enough to measure in person: 4468, 4464 and 60009.

Any feedback is still appreciated at this point before we "lock in" for tooling.

Cheers,

Dave

The bits I was looking at have radically improved! I don't think I can offer any more constructive comment (I note that one of the photos of the new nose has the nose slightly back down, which may be misleading if not noticed)

Brilliant. I wonder how long these will remain in stock, as I can't afford one in the next six months!

Well done.....

Well I am really surprised at the lukewarm/ lack of response to the latest 3D sample. As I said previously, the head on view does not resemble an A4, a look at the photo of SNG in post 10 shows that. I am repeating myself but I am convinced the 1st revision was much nearer than the latest. Sorry but that’s how I see it.

Bob
