Duncan.
Hi Dave, Once when I was asked about weathering, must be 20 years ago, I remember saying it makes the model look heavier, you can see the weight i it. I think they look fine Dave, once again I am glad to see someone having a go. I will be posting some pictures of 37239 soon complete with 'full' front repeater number. Cheers Duncan

DavidMcKenzie
After doing a few very heavily weathered locos, it was nice to do a lightly weathered one for a change. The roof is an area I have always struggled with, but this one has come out better than any of my previous attempts I think. But as always I would value any opinions or tips. I will leave the loco a few days and take another look with fresh eyes before giving it a run on the layout and getting a few photos of it in action. DavidMcKenzie
After 86261 went so well and looked very nice running around on the layout I thought I'd have a go at another 86. So 86606 got a similar light weathering, any comments or suggestions are as always welcome. With 86606 I am reasonably happy, as revolutions KFAs should be heading my way sometime soon I thought I would pair this loco up to run double header as was often the case in the later half of the 90s. The trouble I have is the other grey RFD 86 looks far too heavily weathered when they run as a pair. I have been through a lot of old photos online and although at times 86s did end up heavily weathered during the late 90s, I couldn't find any pairs running together with such different levels of weathering. Does anyone have experience of 'removing' weathering on a Dapol model? I have tried rubbing thinner on a cotton bud over the weathering and it hasn't done anything to remove it. I am worried anything stronger might start removing the Dapol paint. The model is not varnished and is painted with vallejo airbrush colours. Any tips or help to get me out of my muddle would be very much appreciated. All the best Dave 8
DavidMcKenzie
A few photos from a fun running session. A lot of the stock got a run, found a few locos in dire need of wheel cleaning. A bit ashamed to say I can't remember when I last gave them a bit of tlc and a basic clean. I see there is a 10mb upload limit on photos so I will post the others over the next little while. Smallwonder
Brilliant modelling. Shows that you don't need to compromise on realism in N gauge.

Thanks for your kind comment. There seems to be more N gauge layouts than ever that have motivated me and shown the way with regards to what is possible (despite the size). The improvements in quality of RTR stock in the last 5/10 years has most definitely helped and I just don't have the space for an OO layout so I didn't have much choice really. DavidMcKenzie
With the upload limit it might take a while to load all the pictures from the other days running and photo session, starting to wonder if we over did it and took too many photos. Doing it 3 or 4 at a time, but hopefully they are still interesting even if a bit delayed. Over the holidays I will have an attack on the class 86 double header to run with the KFAs from revolution which were a brilliant Xmas present and turned up just in time for the 25th. I am very impressed with the KFA model. This combined with the weathering of the containers on James Markin's workbench has motivated me to have a go at a few containers of my own over the holidays. And the next few photos below: All the best Dave Edited December 26, 2019 by DavidMcKenzie

RMweb Premium MrSimon Posted December 26, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 26, 2019 Great pictures Dave! The class 90s look great, I’ve had the transfers for them in my box for probably 15-20 years - if I ever get round to them I hope I make as good a job as yours! Cheers Simon

Cheers Simon Thanks Simon, a couple of 90s would look great on Gresby (even if i am a bit bias towards the class 90s ). I am keeping my fingers crossed that Bachmann bring out the shrink ray for the oo class 90 which looks like a cracking model and I will have to order another set of transfers and have another go at them both again because it was a lot of fun. all the best Dave

RMweb Gold Robert Shrives Posted December 27, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 27, 2019 In one word WOW ! Such a lovely opus very evocative of the period and as is the touchstone of modelling consistent throughout. - Also of course one of my favourite periods - colourful but quality reality! I look forward to updates as your time allows. Many thanks for sharing. I hope in time you get a chance to be "published" in one of the magazines. shanks522
Fantastic set of photos David! Everything looks spot on! personally i think the trees really make it, so many layouts lack enough of them and it really creates the scene on your layout! Look forward to more as always! Regards Graham.

All the best for 2020 Robert Hi Robert, Thanks for your kind comments, the period was a really interesting one wasn't it. Such a nice mix of locos and liveries, I don't think I will ever run out of interesting things to model. I am already starting to think the fiddle yard could grow and the layout is no where near finished yet. I am very humbled by the idea of being published in a magazine, I still feel very much like a beginner with lots to learn, but I am very much enjoying modelling and learning as much as possible along the way as I go. Regards Graham. Thanks for your kind comments Graham, I agree about the trees, I very quickly came to the conclusion that I need a lot of them after a combination of watching a few onboard videos and just sitting on trains looking out the windows. Also a quick search on the internet of the WCML in 1997 brought up a lot of photos like this. Although I have decided not to model anywhere exactly, one of the main things that stood out in the majority of photos was both the number and size of trees in the background. In an attempt to make the scene look and feel bigger than it actually is I have also tried to play with forced perspective a bit. The trees on the layout get smaller as they go away from usual viewing points, the embankment gets less high, the trackside fence gets closer to the track etc. it is all subtle, but I think it has helped to make use of the limited space as best as possible. DavidMcKenzie
A break from photos from the running session today. The class 86s that were not matching each other so well (as pointed out in an earlier post) got some attention. A big thank you to both Stephen and Duncan for the tips on this. I have very slightly increased the weathering (mostly the faiding of the paint work) on the lead freightliner 86 and drastically reduced and reworked the rfd 86 that will run at the back. I feel they match a lot better now. I gave them a run with the farish intermodals even though eventually they will run with the new KFAs. The next step will be some containers. All the best Dave Edited December 27, 2019 by DavidMcKenzie I don't seem able to change the position of the last picture 15
Guest MM1991
This is one of my favourite layouts on RMWeb, the other being Warrington Dallam. Both capture the WCML look perfectly. Im a 4mm modeller and wish I could see N gauge models properly to make proper use of them!
