CazRail Posted June 4, 2020 Author Share Posted June 4, 2020 So I decided yesterday to buy a Bachmann class 37 to run with my Regional Railways coaches, so I ordered 37422 in RR colours. The model is factory weathered which isnt great, so I intend to clean the body sides up, and re-weather. At the same time, Ill renumber it to 37429 Eisteddfod Genedlaethol, as it's the one I remember from most when I was a kid. Also Im im the middle of weathering my old Heljan cargowaggon vans, mostly as practice for when my Revolution Holdall vans arrive later in the year. The method Im using is to use a base of Railmatch frame dirt, then detailing using washes, then tie it all together using weathering powders. Ill seal it all in using Halfords matt lacquer. CazRail Posted June 5, 2020 Author Share Posted June 5, 2020 (edited) Done a bit on the 37 tonight, just removing the majority of the weathering on the bodysides. I used IPA and cotton buds working in a downward motion as to achieve a streaking effect. Before... After... I think its definitely an improvement from the standard Bachmann 'dust the whole thing with brown' approach, as some amount of effort was made to keep these locos presentable. Here's the rests... CazRail Posted June 11, 2020 Author Share Posted June 11, 2020 On the workbench today... The 150 is suffering from stiff screws with stripped heads, so will need drilling out. It'll then be fitted with a 21-pin laisdcc decoder. The 37 is back to complete it's transformation into 37429. CazRail Posted June 21, 2020 Author Share Posted June 21, 2020 Got a few things to do on the workbench over the next 2-3 weeks to keep me busy. Firstly, a commission job for Jack @JackB95 to re-spray a Hornby 67 and 153 into Transport for Wales livery. As can be seen on his workbench, he has already done work to update the 153 to current condition. The other project is on my Hornby Pendolino, for which I've bought a donor motor car. First job will be to get the unit back up and running, so I will swap out the motor bogie for the donor one. That will solve the running issues on my unit. Next on the agenda, is to make the donor into a dummy,and remove all electronics from within. The plan is to cut out the nose to install a Kadee coupler to enable it to be dragged by my 57. I'm toying with the idea of re-fitting the red tail lights using fibre obtic, but we shall see. 2 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

CazRail Posted October 24, 2021 Author Share Posted October 24, 2021 Another EWS/DB themed re-number this evening, turning a standard Hornby 60026 into a DB-branded 60065. Very happy with this one as I didn't need to re-spray the gold band, due to some careful removing of the numbers/lettering. Transfers once again from Railtec, and are of superb quality, as always. CazRail Posted November 5, 2021 Author Share Posted November 5, 2021 Grabbed myself a bargain 60081 on a popular auction site this week, and decided to paint its, and 60065's obstacle deflectors yellow as per the real things... I used Railmatch warning yellow with a dash of EWS gold and a couple of drops of white, and got a fair result. 60065 has had a black wash on the panel lines, which itself makes a difference, and 60081 will be similarly treated, before both are suitably weathered. 60081 has also had a Zimo MX600R decoder fitted and a warm white LED in the fan room, with a 2K2 resistor rather than the 1K currently fitted in 60065, which I'm planning to swap out. 2 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

CazRail Posted December 17, 2021 Author Share Posted December 17, 2021 (edited) Following hot on the heals of the Tugs are a pair of Bachmann 37/0s being 37055 and 37114. The plan is to weather them to 2004-ish condition, with some faded paintwork, a touch of bodywork damage, and a general weathering. Ive started with 114, on which Ive used white Oilbrusher paint on the roof and bonnet tops to fade, the bodysides remained fairly un-faded(for want of a better word). Ive then used Tamiya black panel line wash to represent ingrained dirt in all the nooks and crannys. Next is the airbrush for this one, and some etched nameplates in the new year. (For whatever reason, Im having issues with images loading up to RMweb upside down) As far as 37055 goes, it will too have faded paintwork, but will be a little less subtle on this to reflect it's older paint job. As per the original itll also loose it's nameplates, replaced with a blue patch-up. It'll also need replacement OHLE warning signs to the late 90s-2000s style. CazRail Posted December 19, 2021 Author Share Posted December 19, 2021 Done some more, mostly on 37055. Ive used the white Oilbrusher by Ammo Mig to fade the rood and the bodysides on this one. In the previous post, 37114 got a much lighter treatment on it's roof only. The aim is a work worn, rainlashed finish... The Oilbrusher is dotted strategically around the roof, then I used this to fade the bonnet tops, roof and bodysides. I'm quite pleased with the finish. Next is a wash in the nooks and crannys to represent ingrained dirt, then it's airbrush. The tricky bit is getting the right amount of fade withou making it look like it's had a disagreement with an aggregates loader. 2 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
CazRail Posted January 6, 2022 Author Share Posted January 6, 2022 Something a little different on my workbench tonight, a signal box! I've been working on a representation (rather than an accurate model) of Mostyn signal box, in keeping with my north Wales coast theme. Made using various plastic sheets, I'm waiting on a few styrene bits to arrive before I can move on with the build. Here's the progress so far, with the main walls of the interlocking room cut out. Still to do on this level are the inset parts of the walls(each with 4 windows cut into), paint the inside off-white, windows and doors. Im leaving the up side wall off until everything else is done. Ive started the lower parts of the operating room, which is my next focus of the build. The next bits to be added is the glazing sheets, off which the rest of the cabin will be built off. Of course, not much to show just yet, but Im hoping to make steady progress on this during the dark evenings of the next two or three months. I have a Wills signal box interior kit on order for this, which I will use the bits to make it a fair representation of the real thing. Only thing with it the lever frame isnt the LNWR tumbler frame of the real box, but it'll do. I'm still debating whether to install a representation of the interlocking under the box, as there is 8 windows per side. To add to this, I'm planning on lighting the box, definitely the operating room, but also the interlocking room, and maybe provide exterior lighting around the steps. 2 2 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

As mentioned before, the actual glazing is structurally integral, as it basically holds the roof up. The window frames wont hold any weight although I hope they'll be a snug fit. Up side elevation: Down side elevation: Low-mileage end elevation: High-mileage end elevation: Sneaky peak inside the cabin, the lever frame will go on the down side of the box. Very fiddly job, requiring a steady handle and gentle touch. Managed to do half of the box(low mileage end and down side), will do more tomorrow. Operating cabin windows now completed all the way around, just needs the door to be put on. Interior of the operating cabin has also been done. The levers are set as if the box it switched out, to represent it's last few years of operation. I also cut out all the windows on the inset part of the interlocking room, and glaze and assemble one side. CazRail Posted February 3, 2022 Author Share Posted February 3, 2022 After receiving the superb Revolution Trains IWA wagons nearly 2 weeks ago, I've now plucked up the courage to have a bash at weathering them. Done two so far... After an initial layer of Railmatch Sleeper Grime I used a cotton bud wetted with IPA to clean the data panels, then weathering powders of different colours were used to build up the dirt. This was all sealed in with Matt varnish. As can be seen in the photo, the two so far done have been weathered slightly different, as I want to avoid a uniform weathering for the whole rake. 1 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
