lancer1027
Random question, but does anyone have any measurements for any of the WR class 47 names? Nameplate lengths, height. Letter size(height etc)
Rugd1022
The letters for City Of Truro, North Star, Sir Daniel Gooch, George Jackson Churchward and Isambard Kingdom Brunel are the same size as those used on the Westerns, the letter spacing and height of the plates was the same too so you should be able to work out the length for each one from photos... The other plates for Atlas, Thor etc had Egyptian / serif letters, not sure of the dimensions but they look fairly similar.

Coach bogie
GEORGE JACKSON CHURCHWARD had replacement plates shortened to G J CHURCHWARD in the blue era, Mike Wiltshire
Rugd1022
They were fitted in the Factory at Old Oak in March '
RMweb Gold Phil Bullock Posted November 12, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 12, 2017 Somehow George Jackson Churchward carried more gravitas - and probably increased the adhesive weight of the loco significantly too! Phil
Rugd1022
Hopefully a useful comparison shot I took in the museum at Swindon a few years ago... the last time I went though none of these plates were on display...
RMweb Gold Phil Bullock Posted November 12, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 12, 2017 That shows nicely how much bigger D1000s name plate was Nidge - many thanks for sharing Phil
Coach bogie
If you want a model with a difference, City of Truro ran with half the outer beading missing, on one side in the mid 70's. Made it easier to spot when approaching. Mike Wiltshire
RMweb Gold Phil Bullock Posted November 12, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 12, 2017 And she was also rare - if not unique amongst 47s - in running in blue with early serif numbers https://www.flickr.com/photos/locohunter/21167616921/in/photolist-ehYCAy-s9Yeig-nbuGGM-dPwkbp-8V9ejA-8Y3JDQ-ejoHvi-6AZNBG-yanDwg-RaNTZ9-tMNPoe-s78VWA-dkTvn9-9DXU7u-yfvz3r But when in green she had the TOPs style numbers! https://www.flickr.com/photos/chrisengland/21109488615 Phil
Rugd1022
1660 was indeed the only blue 47 to have serif style numbers on the cabsides Phil, and for a short while when it was in GFYE the nameplates were painted before being repainted black again Edited November 13, 2017 by Rugd1022
billy_anorak59
....City of Truro ran with half the outer beading missing, on one side in the mid 70's Just for interest - my photo of 1660's (as it was then - Birkenhead in Feb 1973) plate, showing the missing beading: I always managed to get the composition lop-sided - Instamatic, you see ... . tamperman36
Wasn't the lettering style and plate design changed on the 4 47's that were repainted for the GWR 150 celebrations. Didn't they get brass names and numbers with the same font as used on 50007 Sir Edward Elgar.
Classsix T
Didn't the likes of Mammoth, Odin etc. have a font more akin to the Warships? I only mention because 47085 was a transferee to Stratford and had the 'plate altered in height. C6T. Apologies, Nidge said exactly this earlier, as you were.
