Love this thread, good to see authentic NER, what did you use for the brickwork on the buildings, they are little works of art.

Thank you!

They was not built by me, but I think they are mixture of Wills / Slaters plastic card and then painted / weathered.

Hope that helps

Ant

Internal tramway for the shipyard, unfortunately there was never a bridge over to that side of the river (apart from when building Larpool viaduct), a goods only branch over there would make an interesting layout though...

Perfectly feasible. BR left the track in place over Larpool Viaduct and out to Hawker as late as 1973, due to proposals to sink a Potash mine at Hawker.

I haven't seen any mention of it in your thread, but have you got a copy of Ken Hoole's North Eastern Branch Line Termini (ISBN 0-86093-219-2, OPC 1985)? Amazon currently has a few for sale, but I have seen them at exhibitions.

It has a whole chapter devoted to Whitby, including locomotive and train working, Whitby loco allocations, dated photographs, drawings of the station, signal box, warehouse, goods shed, engine shed and, finally, a scaled track plan, although it is, unfortunately, undated.

I’ve got a few books on whitby town, or have mentioned / photographers of whitby town.

I do have the Ken Hoole ‘North Eastern Branch Lines Termini’

If you know any other titles, anything will be appreciated

Potter's history of the Whitby & Pickering if you can get it 2nd hand.

Again 2nd hand these days but Dalesman had at least two editions of their publication on the Whitby & Pickering/NYMR but I can't remember what coverage Whitby gets.

In the various Sutcliffe photographic volumes (or prints via the gallery) a few images show the railway.

Those are some wonderful looking buildings, I especially like the Signal Box and the Engine Shed which leads me on to a slightly off topic post but it is related to Whitby Engine Shed.

It has recently been converted into 11 high spec holiday apartments, all the apartments are named after steam locomotives and has a Railway themed decor.  We stayed there this August Bank Holiday (our apartment was ‘Blue Peter’). It may be a lot cleaner now than in the photos above but externally nothing has changed (it is a listed building after all), inside however:

The view from from our bedroom window:

Enjoyed reading through this thread (sorry for being late to the party!)

If you need any larger NER brackets or more robust M&H finials drop me a line and/or follow this link.

Just a quick 2020 update, Along time coming finally have my own place / hoping to find the time setup Whitby in years to come.

No real new updates, I have had few weathered locos finished & sound fits done so now moving on to the rolling stock while I 'do up' the house as it was left in state by the last owner.

Hopefully in month or so I might start something ... Watch this space :)

Hello, I found this thread while searching for old railways in Whitby - what a great project.

I grew up in sleights in the late '60s and 70s and went to school on the train every day. Even at that time Whitby town station was a fascinating place.

My dad lived "on the railway" on George street and he used to tell me about the level crossing at Bog Hall near the old engine sheds. Memory fades but I'm almost certain there was a turntable near the engine sheds - only the pit was left when I was at school but I remeber at the time thinkin what it would have been like when it was operating at full capacity. Strange that nobody else has mentioned there being a turntable at Whitby Town.

We also used to use the incline down from Prospect hill looping round under the Viaduct as an "unofficial" route down from school to the station.

Hello, Thank you please come back in years to come to see this build up.

But 100% their was turntable at Whitby Town & Two Pits ( One at the turntable / One outside one of the shed roads ) the turntable is more located away / otherside of the running lines from the shed ( Under the big carpark now )

You just see the pit as you enter the turntable.

The turntable is next on the todo list so will feature here very soon I hope.

So during lockdown I’ve been messing around with anyrail to give myself idea on the scale I would need to complete whitby town, so from the engine shed and moving towards bog hall / prospect hill, I made a rough idea in 14ft by 3ft plan.

Let me know your thoughts I’m thinking it needs to be another 4ft in length to get decent size trains through / stored etc etc

( note where plans are laid out is not it’s final resting place )
