Built in 1955, Deltic was made to be a sales tool for rail use of the Napier Deltic power unit, which had been developed for marine use. English Electric in Preston constructed the locomotive with an eye towards the export market, and Deltic’s stylish striping and striking dummy headlight hint to Transatlantic trade which never came.

The name comes from the Greek letter delta, and refers to the shape of the diesel engine itself. Tested until 1961, by which time it had accumulated 450,000 miles, it has been part of the Science Museum collection since then.

The locomotive is finished in WCML Livery condition with the addition of 2 Headboards, for The Merseyside Express and The Shamrock.

Just reminds me of being very sad when my Mum and Dad refused to get the Deltic hauled train from Liverpool, opting for a different service. Grrrrrr....I think it was at 10.00 [and to think we would have gone in a Green Goddess tram to catch it!]
