The foam ballast is disintegrating badly and, whilst its replacement on a piece of plain line is simple enough, this is a different prospect, even ignoring the fact that you can't get the point inlays any more.

I have some that are surplus to requirements. You're welcome to them if you want.

If you're not keen on revisiting Peco foam underlays, you might like to consider this product as a convenient way to avoid all that tedious ballasting on your magnum opus : https://www.tracklay.co.uk/

No relation, just a happy customer.

Bigger problem at the moment is getting hold of the track, especially the points - there seems to be a national shortage of Peco points. What is the world coming to?!

I understand that Peco switched track at the start of the pandemic panic and started to make PPE but are now back to making our toys.

Well, that's most kind of you, gentlemen.

There's a lot more that I could - and maybe will - do to it as a model. It was always my intention to add the distinctive canopies, seen above, for the 'country' ends of the platforms. Note the water columns also.

I did go and have a mooch round the site in the early 1980s and took some pictures of my own, shortly before work started to create G-Mex and thus at least save the station structure for posterity.

As a related piece of trivia, according to the Foxline 'Manchester Railway Termini' book, on platform 4/5 was a model of the 'Ben Machree' Isle of Man steamship in a glass case. So we gotta have a model of a model on the model! But all in good time. Some rather more important work to do first ...

Which roof are you doing for Carlisle? The old one covered up almost the entire station and the present one covers a lot of it. We've just about given up on the idea of building the roof for the EM layout, I did think of doing a sort of wire frame representation of the new roof but it would be far too big to lift off for access.

I'll make a decision at the time Mike, once I have the station area laid out and I can see the physical size and shape for real. As you know, it will be a scaled down version (but still with all platforms as they were / are). I reckon the overall roof would need to be about 8 feet long - what are the scale lengths, out of interest,  both original and cut back?

My ideal era is 1956-58, slightly earlier than David's (I have to have red Duchesses and prior to the diesel takeover). This of course is exactly the time when the roof was cut back! So I do have a choice and I am fatally attracted to the glorious Tudor-gothic endscreen, even though it was somewhat dilapidated at the end and would cover up much of the station...

Options include only doing the full screen at the south end (on my plan, the north end is somewhat compromised and starts to curve round unprototypically), having it removable to reveal the more cut down version, not bothering with it over plat.1 & sidings (as per the current arrangement). Having part of it removable one way or another will be a must, whatever I decide.

That is indeed the name (spelling) of the current boat on the Heysham route, wot we sailed on last year. However, I'm led to understand that the former vessel modelled did have the anglicised name 'Ben Machree'. I think it (the model) still survives and I might have seen it at MOSI but not 100% sure on that.

The new roof would be over 2m long, I did draw out some of it while doing the drawings for the island platform buildings.

I've done plenty of other drawings, just ask for anything you need.

Thanks Mike. I'm surprised it's that short, even in its shortened form(!) I shall have to pace it out next time I'm there.

You have previously kindly made your files available. And I know where you are if I get 'stuck'. Being realistic, will be a couple of years yet I think before I'm getting properly stuck into the station itself.

A while ago I was on Carlisle Station, probably for one of the steam excursions, and there was a modeller complete with tape measure and note pad taking a whole series of measurements.    He was last seen being escorted away from the platforms by an officer of the Transport Police.  I hope he managed to convince them of his honourable intentions.

Perhaps it was someone on RMweb and who reads this. If so how did you get on?
