Did any of them work over Shap? My sightings of GT3 were in the Manchester area (though it did work along the GC for a time). I saw DELTIC at Hartford on its Liverpool turns, and I never saw the Fell. I believe it ran between Manchester Central and St. Pancras. What would be nice would be the twin Ivatt Co-Co diesels, and maybe the ex-SR 1-Co-Co-1s. Other than DELTIC, I don't have any models of those mentioned. Page 25 of British Rail Main Line Diesel Locomotives, shews GT3 hauling 1Z79, an 18 car test train, on the 5th and 6th October 1962. I know the Fell worked mainly on the Manchester Central-St Pancras route, whether it ever went over Shap, who knows? Gibbo.
LNER4479
There's a slight gleam in my eye to have 10203 as this did work the Royal Scot in the summer of 1957. And, yes there is a picture of GT3 passing Shap summit in the Derek Cross Steam over Shap book (ironic, given the title). Nothing immediately to hand along any of these lines though - big list of stuff to do on the regular stock first!

dcordingley
There is picture of the Fell diesel in "A North Lancashire Railway Album", heading north through Hest Bank on what is described as a test train to Carlisle - date April 1955. I suspect this was a one-off working, as I haven't come across any other photographic records of it over Shap. On the same page there is a photo of 10203 on the up Royal Scot in 1958, so it looks as though the Bulleid was a regular over Shap for at least a couple of years. I think the slightly less powerful 10201 and 10202 also worked over Shap around this time, but always in multiple. 1957/58 was a bit before my trainspotting days in Lancaster, but I do remember seeing 10203 on more menial duties at the southern end of the WCML in the early 1960s. Look forward to seeing Hills of the North at Peterborough! David 2

RMweb Premium Michael Edge Posted October 18, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 18, 2019 You can have the Fell in black or green, preferably not both at once though as we managed to do on Chapel before arranging a token system. 2 1
RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted October 18, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 18, 2019 Please remember with 10000 and 10001 when in multiple they normally ran with the number one ends facing outwards. Some times the number one end on both locos was facing inwards and to date I have only seen one photo of them where both locos were facing the same way. 10201 and 10202 appear to have also ran mainly with the number one outwards.

I've just rather run out of time for this weekend's show and getting the engines mod'd is of course the first task. FWIW, 46248 (nee 46251) came with the factory brown haze already applied so all I've done for now is to apply a similar shade to the new bits of plastic to maintain the uniform look (otherwise that would have looked REALLY odd!). Super Barry-O of this parish does rather a good line in subtle weathering of Duchesses... In the meantime, feel free to post as many pictures as you like of these magnificent machines! Having been shaken to bits on a new Azuma..do you mean some weathering like this? Built by Mike Edge, painted by Larry Goddard EM gauged by Mike Edge(or Graham Varley?) weathered by me now on Carlisle. Jaggzuk
Really enjoyed watching trains go by with my two boys up at Shap, via Hartlepool. There was something quite calming just waiting for the next train, maybe it was the landscape the line was set in but it was just lovely to watch. The "real" banking duties was just perfect and when I found out it was analogue, most impressive! The real gadient (on the layout) was not that evident until up hill passednger train was stopped for a lineside photoshoot and very kind photo lesson that my 6 year old got from Tony Wright (thank you), the wheel slip was very real and proved the banking trains were indeed doing real work. Thanks for putting on a good layout show. 5 1
johndon
Stood and watched the trains go by for 20 minutes at Hartlepool this morning. I was particularly impressed at how quietly the trains ran. John

Fantastic perspectives in those photographs Tony. Thank you for sharing. The latter two might show those "cruel close ups" on many a layout, but these are fantastic, and a testament to the quality of modelling on display here. Congratulations to all involved. Popular Post LNER4479
Only one from me - a bit of fun at the end! Not sure what the assembled gallery made of this monster ... which did manage to make it's way round without destroying any lineside infrastructure. More importantly, the weekend was a marvellous opportunity to give the layout with new fiddle yard and much expanded stock a real good shakedown in advance of the big shows to come. New fiddle yard was a great success and Andrew's clever electronics allowed for slick operation. We had 33 trains in all; 2 are reversible making 35 actual trains seen up or down the bank, plus 6 banking engine returns, hence 41 train movements in all. And we were cycling round in 40-45 minutes. Given that train movements are not especially fast (some can easily take two minutes to do a full circuit), I don't reckon you can improve much on that. 29 1

I never saw Shap in steam days but my Peter Handford LP captures the sheer solitude of the fells between trains. I'd be inclined to try to replicate that by leaving at least a real minute or two between any two trains in the same direction.
