Now theres a unit I would love a regional railways 101 set, is it an easy build kit Cam?

Yes it is an EB kit. Just waiting for Cam to finish his painting wizardry and I can get it finished off. Chassis is all but done so it will be transfers glazing and a few final bits. Hope to have it finally finished before the end of the year. It was my first gauge kit but its been a bit stop start.

Not been much work bench activity as such, been working on Cam's layout. I have just finished one item but that's for another write up when get round to it. However, inspired by someone else who is making one of Skog's VGA's I have dug mine out and made a start. Still a way to go but I've got rolling chassis and made a start on the body. De to the nature of 3D printing there is a lot of graining on some parts so with the doors in particular I have cut the middles out and just used the frame laminated to a flat piece of Plasticard.

Hopefully get the other two doors done tomorrow and finish off the chassis bits then work out how to build the roof.

2021 Review.

Another year where nothing happened, well it seems like it. Motivation has been at times at an all-time low, but a number of things have passed across my workbench and been completed. The year started well with finishing off my Xmas project rake of YCV Turbots. A couple of VAA’s, a VGA, 7xMHA Coalfish, a ZUV Shark a TTA and a number of running repairs have crossed the WB with a lot more stuff part way through. I think my modelling highlight of last year was getting this PHV finally off the WB:

2022 Hopes & Aspirations

Lots of exciting things to come next year as long as the motivation continues. 26005 & my 101 are nearing completion, if I can get Cam to finish the paint then they will come together quickly now. Lots of wagons on the WB, one nearly as modern as you can get will hopefully be over the line in the new year. Paint has been going on and transfers shouldn’t be too far behind. There will also be some more of Paul Rolley’s wagons to build and write up along with (hopefully) a brand-new kit. I have two of Paul’s kits ready to go but one is waiting some transfers.

Thanks to everyone who has popped in here and my layout threads, have a Great New Year and lets see what 2022 will through at us.

Well 2022 hasn't started well on the modelling front, work has been nuts and a dose of Covid this week hasn't helped. A couple of transfer deliveries this week and an order of wheels from last year and a small amount of motivation means that there will be another wagon off the work bench on the next week or so.

In other news I bit the bullet with a Heljan 47, yes they have their issues but they are still not bad value compared to a kit and I don't have the time to build one into a decent enough model so Heljan is where I am at! 47492 has had the cant rail cut back and transferred up, plates have just been fixed on (drying) an the buffer beams stripped for a coat of red paint before putting it all back together and delivering to Cam for dirt and sound once I've been released from isolation!

Looks great to me Al, Iv got two now, parcels one yet to have sound.

Hope your ok and getting over the covid.

Getting better, just fed up now. Still testing positive, today is day 7.................

This one is on its way and I've a TTG one winging its way to me at some point. No rush though as Cam's layout and a couple of wagons are a priority atm, at least until the show in March is over.

Latest off the WB, this can't be more than six months out of the Paint Shops. DB's Freight Belongs On Rail HRA Wagon. This has been in progress for a little while now but has been finished int he last couple of days. It does have a little brother too as I had a Bachman HTA kicking around but that's not quite done yet. Lots & Lots of tiny details thanks to Railtec.

That looks excellent Al, who’s kit is that?

Regards

Julian.

Its a cut down Skytrex HTA kit. Unfortunately no longer available as the mould for the chassis has failed, they managed to do this one for me but it was the last chassis and it was damaged. If they'd re-release it I may do a few more. I'll probably talk to Dave at our show in Crewe about them.

Hi Al,

Hope your well. Was looking at your MEA build and you soldered W irons in etc. is this the best way because of the white metal?

I was thinking of getting one but Im far from the worlds best when it comes to soldering.

Regards

Julian.

I'm good thanks Julian, just very busy with work. Modelling is taking somewhat of a back seat atm!

It was a while ago I built that and the first time I had built something with a white metal frame and solder construction. I definitely built the main chassis with solder but I may have attached the W irons with super glue. I've got more confidence with soldering white metal now so would probably go with a fully soldered construction now. It is certainly stronger than superglue. The thing to remember with White Metal when soldering is it melts! You need flux and a low metal solder and take car not to melt the parts, I'd recommend watching some youtube tutorials. To me its a completely different skill to electrical soldering which was all I had done previously.

I'd also recommend a low voltage soldering iron. I have a 12v version I hook up to a Gaugemaster controller and set the temperature that way. As long as it melts the solder and not the castings you are OK!!!!

You can also solder brass to whitemetal by tinning the brass first with a 188 degreee solder and then using the  low melt to join them together. Sounds complicated but I have had a lot of practice and after practice it does become easier.

Really lacking much motivation at the moment, work is nuts and the run up to the show everything was a bit crazy. The office is a complete tip, but I am hoping to rectify that tomorrow and start knocking a few things off the WB. Tonight I have managed to get transfers on 47114 so tomorrow I hope to get it in satin varnish ready for weathering, I know the tanks are wrong but this will get rectified t some point in the future.

I have a third one to build and refer to the instructions you have done, a great help.

Ta, can't deny I refer to them myself if I do further of the same wagons!

A little more motivation over the last week saw me cutting up Cam's 2TG 47. We'd discussed how easy or not would it be to do a cutaway cab version. Looking at the body it seemed quite an easy job, the bufferbeam though looked a bit more difficult. The following shows t how I did it and the final picture after it had been returned to Cam for transfers & dirt. It will come back to my workshop so I can add a little more detail to the bufferbeam sides at some point after the Doncaster show.

I am quite pleased with how this is turning out. All being well I might have something else just about off the WB next weekend if I can keep this motivation up!
