Finally got another one (well two really) of Paul's kits finished and written up. The PXA/KEA wagon certainly makes up into an impressive wagon, especially if you don't build one of the few with conventional draw gear both end. This pair are both outers with conventional draw gear one end and Kadee's representing buckeye the other.  These are still running round today on scrap and stone traffic but I really think the original TML liver for the CTRL really makes them stand out.

I had ordered one, but it appears that I’ll have to wait a bit longer for mine as there actually weren’t any in stock, however, what kadees did you use for the intermediate couplers and what solder and wattage iron did you use on the bogies having never soldered white metal components before I’ll give it a go

Excellent, I keep thinking about adding a couple of inners too, though having found the picture I used for the header of the page I might just substitute a couple of Heljan OAA's vice OBA's and eventually add a break van.

Kadees are #804 and as for Whitemetal Soldering, have a trawl round Youtube!! The first thing I soldered with Whitemetal was the brake shoes on on the  Heljan IWA, what a mess! Now I am by no means an expert but have managed to get the bogies for these and a few others free running and square with a lot of trial an error and a bit of bodging, but everyone needs to learn somehow. I have just used my bulk standard Antex 25W Iron, some good flux and 70deg solder. The solder comes in sticks and I cut it up into small pieces, I tend to cut 1/2mm off the end then cut it in two. I tend to tack the whitemetal pieces together then come back and finish them off once I can sit the bogies on a piece of track to ensure they are free running and tweak with the iron.  Wet your join with flux, drop a piece of solder in the join, then touch it with the iron, it will melt immediately and should flow, take the iron off and let it cool then do it again until you are happy with the join. The solder will go molten as soon as you touch it, when its set it will go a dull colour. Just done rush, just a touch of the iron will melt what you need. You could probably get away with gluing the brake shoes on the bogies for the PXA and just solder the bolster in place, I added the springs with superglue anyway as there is no way of getting an iron to them. The GJH bogies are far better than the ones Paul sent me for the JNA, but you might have to pack the bogie mounts with some washers. Good luck, I look foward to seeing your progress, if you need anything shout.

Knew there was something else I meant to add, phone rang, ironically it was Pau! He also does a casting for the tunnel segments for a load, I have not seen them but I'll probably have a few sets off him at some point, just drop him an email I am sure he'll sort you out.

Remember whitemetal and 70 deg solder melts easily and take your time, you can always re-melt and adjust your joins!! These are the bogies for the next build:

Fabulous wagons they are, does Paul have a web site to view what kits he does?

Kind regards

Julian.

Julian, Paul's wagons are available either direct from him or through Intentio's website, having just spoke with Paul I don't think the stock level are correct on the Intentio Website but if there is something you're interested in drop him an email.

Intentio Rolling stock (Paul Rolley kits)

Impressionist Models FB Page - Paul's contact details are on here.

Paul's 7mm Wagon FB group Pauls Facebook group for his wagons:

MIOG Wagon Build Reviews You'll find the four builds I have done of Pauls wagons here, I've at least another two in the pipeline.

Can't claim the dirt on these two 08's, courtesy of Cam. Now pretty much ready to enter traffic once I've sourced a chip for 08912.

Also had a delivery from JSModel's as a test for another building on the new layout.

Well, first thing I did the tiles on the roof of the building above and through the day it has been getting multiple coats of paint. Primer coats are done and its now getting a couple of gloss white sealing coats before a final grey primer cost to paint onto. Window frames also going into paint. I'll have an update on this tomorrow and maybe if I am lucky it will have a first top coat.

Today's other job has been a fiddly soldering job. There are two wagons working their way through the WB at the moment (one I really need to get finish) the other will sit on the bogies shown above. These are the end steps:

Windows and doors on the building are now getting some paint and the main building is almost ready for top coats, might be another day or so before a photographic update on that one.

In the meantime my 2nd 26 is nearing completion, Cam's airbrush is back out and we have the transfers so I've really got to get the chassis done. New bogie frames arrived some time ago and Heljan have altered the mouldings. Sand boxes and all the pipework are now separate parts on the new 33's bogies so when I ordered the new bogies they came missing all the additional details as Gaugemaster split all the parts. I managed to get the actual Sandboxes but couldn't be bothered to to through the faff of trying to explain what bits where missing in terms of pipework. All added with single core wire with the plastic stripped off., I am actually quite please with how these have come out. I could go to town with this but I just want it done now.  Heljan also don't do the the early type angled steps. These were an opportunity purchase from Steve Beatie, a faff to solder but once painted they will be spot on. Lastly the 26 in question has the alternative speedo arrangement created from a plasticard offcut and a piece of wire.

Building update. Doors I am happy with, Window frames are getting there, will get a few more coats of paint over the next couple of days & the main building is also coming along. Relatively happy with the general colour, lots more weathering to do and a sealing cost to add when its all together but it is getting there. next job is to paint the window ledges.

I've got some alternative glazing for the mill now so some experiments over the weekend. I have now fitted the window frames now I am happy with the colour. Nearly done.

I have also done the tie bars on a replacement point for the layout. We decided the flow was wrong so we've swapped a point out.

26 chassis nearly done. Just need to finish painting the air tanks and fit them. Also tried fitting a sound chip but its not going so well. Pretty sure its and ESU V4 with a 4oHm speaker. Ned to go back to it as I've managed to change the address and it seems to be registering but can't get it to work atm and its buzzing.

Also had a minor accident with the Hattons sale, could have been much worse.

Al, With the Motor Buzz, I had the and had one Motor wired back to front so they were fitting each other, but you've probably tried that already.

Its only got one motor so I am trying your trick of using a chip robbed out of one of my 4mm loco's! Will have a tinker tomorrow!

A fresh pair of eyes and the 26 now breaths! Bloody Heljan wiring, one red and one black are track power and one red and one black are motor feeds! There was me thinking red was track and black was motor! A quick switch around and we're good to go.

  • 3 weeks later...

Pretty much no progress for a couple of weeks here however there has been a bit of a reallocation of stock including a rake of Turbots. Cam's pre prod Turbot has now come my why in exchange for some foreign HO bits, one of which was bought to help get the transfers for the IWA's done and  KMS having a deal on Turbots as well has finally tempted me so a few more have appeared.

Wide awake early doors this morning so I started taking them apart to start weathering, doors all removed:

1157875618_YCV1.jpg.949a77d9eb5661de9b34d0625f46a7eb.jpg

A base coat of Hubrol 62 for the deck:

1045062994_YCV2.jpg.340408dc43ad70445a29d96f39bdf2a7.jpg

A couple of different browns to pick out some individual planks:

1553812644_YCV4.jpg.3e0973ac171fb4fd30ec2f9733cc6ec2.jpg

And finally numbers removed and glossed on some panels ready for some new transfers in the week. I have managed to remove parts of some of the E's but as they'll be somewhat battered I am not too bothered:

I'll go and do a bit more shortly. Plan is to distort the doors but someone 'borrowed' my heat gun so I'll have to find an alternative. I know some use a gas soldering iron but I don't have one, I may try dropping them in boiling water and see what happens.

That was my next plan & it works. However, the bosses hair dryer has a temperature cut out, so as soon as a door is warm enough to bend it stops working until its cooled down! Will have another update tomorrow.
