Thanks Graheme

I got several roller gauges by buying the first two points as kits from C&L. Theirs are very good, locate very securely on the rail head. Managed to get the other 3 sets of point blades and 3 common crossings today at the Chiltern show. That's me stocked up for the complete layout.

Nice to have you on board!

I have been progressing the carriage build.

I decided to paint the interior partitions and seats, and the passengers prior to assembly. I also adapted the seats for the first class with deeper cushions, wings and armrests formed from DAS.

Tonight i did a mock assembly of the body to see how the details will look once the body is assembled. Not bad I reckon.

post-12721-0-18270200-1516138715_thumb.jpg

I then traced the plan of the roof details onto the assembled roof

Next will be the carriage lighting. After that the instructions suggest assembling the body before painting and glazing, but I think I might paint and glaze the sides before I assemble the body.

Nice work Colin, I think it's a wise approach to paint the coach sides prior to assembly, it's one thing I'll have to do with a couple of coaches waiting in the wings.

Update on the coach build.

I have fitted the lighting kit from Layouts 4u with its reed switch onto the coach roof. The switch is operated by wafting a magnet over it so no awkward switch. I have made a retaining lug at one end and put a captive nut the other end to be bolted through from under the floor. This will mean the roof is removable for battery changes or repairs. I chose yellow LEDs to represent the gas light and have taped over 2/3 of them to reduce light output.

I have also painted the sides. I'm going for black ends and different generic liveries on each side. Teak effect one side, renault etruscan red from Halfords on the other. I'm disappointed that the efforts i had to go to to remove the join lines from the sides have left file marks which show through the paint

I have also been working on the bogie frames. Now ready for wheels and brake gear.

The coach build continues.

I have now lettered and varnished the sides and almost finished the bogies. Roof and underframe detail all fitted.

I decided to scratch build some luggage racks and prepare the partitions for fitting into the body.

I used metal mesh bought from ebay, plastic rod and stationery staples for the right angled brackets. I made a jig from foamboard with the dimensions marked on and holes drilled to accomodate the vertical part of the staple. All glued together with epoxy

Heres a finished compartment side

post-12721-0-35233200-1518719804_thumb.jpg

Heres a mock up with seating in place

post-12721-0-40714900-1518719779_thumb.jpg

I just need to glaze the sides, finish the brake gear on the bogies and fit the vac pipes. Because they involve the underframe and ends I have delayed fitting them till the basic body is assembled.

Feels quite close now

All very nice, Colin.

Perhaps you, Spams (with special permission to temporarily leave his Naughty Step) and bgman can advise me in about 500 years time, when I get round to starting my 7mm layout?

More than happy to pass on my enjoyable experiences so far Tim, but can you make it under the 500 year time limit unless you own a Tardis mate !

It has certainly concentrated my mind as to what I really want from my modelling and a proposed layout to operate/ play with.

What really swung it for me was Dave's ( Wenlock ) blog on Sherton Abbas then seeing it at SWAG last year, to my mind a small masterpiece. Add to all of this becoming a GOG member and the help given there too it's a no brainier for me.

This coach build is a good example Tim. It's costing around £120 and taken several man days to complete. Could probably have put together a 3 coach rake of 00 kits in the same time but wouldn't have spent time doing luggage racks and lighting. Equally at the click of a button I could have spent a bit more money and bought a rake of 3 RTR coaches in 00.

In my 10'6" allotted space I could fit a 3 coach rake in 00, or this one unique vehicle in 0 gauge. Apart from some (to me) unnecessarily fiddly bits I have really enjoyed the Slaters kit. My only reservation being the bogies which have been a pig. The brakes are 3 parts per corner, one cast brass, one etchd and one plastic 16 sets on the coach. I think they are fouling on the wheels but there's no real adjustment. I'm not sure how they are going to run yet and I may well be looking for a replacement after I build enough layout to give it a proper test. This is no doubt a foible of this kit which could happen in any scale.

The coach is pretty well finished and I am very pleased with it. It means I can use it to set the platform clearances as I begin to plot out the layout full size. You may recall I have opted for "two for the price of one" by painting each side in a different livery.

I'm an infrequent visitor, Colin, because my knowledge of all things 7mm is erm... rather lacking. Have to say though that I'm mightily impressed. You seem to have taken to it like a duck to water! Excellent stuff.

You are always welcome mate. I'm finding the bigger bits much easier to work with, and it does encourage you to go a bit further with detailing. Hope arrangements for relocating to Spain are going OK?

I have been a bit quiet as modelling time has been restricted and activites somewhat mundane. However, I can reveal a full set of baseboards!

The eagle eyed among you will note I have departed slightly from flat earth, allowing for a general down slope towards the front centre. I have also accommodated the river which will pass under the line. I took a slightly unusual approach with the platform. I wanted to avoid a baseboard join across it, so the joins run alongside it. I then took the opportunity to raise the platform board by 20mm so I won't need to provide a seperate structure to support the platform surface.

The first board has track and wires on it! Yay :)

Can't get the tortoise to work! Boo :(

Coming along nicely Colin.

It would seem that we are working in parallel as I'm also laying track and installing point motors too. I originally used one of my Tortoise motors and a DCC Concepts decoder ( looks like one on your board ? ) and had a similar problem, so, out with a DCC Concepts Analogue motor and a similar decoder which worked !

I swapped the motor over onto the "block of eight" decoders and gave it an address, lo and behold it worked ?

I have an ESU ECoS but have opted to use a simple Loco Multimaus controller which is simple to operate the points ( only four ) and all working fine.

Is there any mileage in looking at the DCC Concepts website - https://www.dccconcepts.com/manual/owners-manual-ad1-and-ad4-accessory-decoders/  which explains setting with various command systems ?
