Why isn't Irish Railway Models listed in the OO Gauge manufacturer of the year catagory? - they've got as many models listed as Heljan who are listed so should qualify?

An oversight in a copy and paste stage; now resolved.

Whilst this is an exciting and significant award scheme and can only promote the hobby as a whole, I am a bit puzzled by some of the nominations.

As an example the OO Dapol Black Label was first released in 2016 and the Dapol O gauge Autocoach and Collet b-set coaches are old Lionheart models first sold some years ago. Neither of these count as 'New' models in my thoughts.

If remakes are allowed then a lot of models are missing missing from all the categories. as an example (and to balance the above comments), Dapol have produced nothing but remakes in N and a lot of O gauge remakes during last year. But these have not been listed as choices.

Other manufacturers have also benefited by, or lost out from the incongruities above. It would be interesting to know how these selections are decided upon. I must admit not a task I would envy.

In O gauge Dapol have introduced a selection of vans which are new - and a representative sample of these is included.

How were the exhibitions selected. Several appear to be associated with the principals on this site. Whereas I don't recollect York (which is an independent) nor, the GCRailway or Butterley Railexs being included - both large multipurpose shows.

The exhibitions were the Top 10 (based on the number of nominations) from the nominations process over Xmas and New Year. York only received one nomination and none for the other two.

The Black Label A4 arrived just before the end of 2016 and was not included in the 2016 awards. The autocoach and B-set are new to the Dapol brand as opposed to re-liveries.

Thank you Andy.

Upon reflection if these were disallowed then nominations for this manufacturer would be somewhat thin upon the ground.

I also observed that Bachmann are nominated for innovation in using the next-18 socket for DCC? Surely DJ models have always specified this and it has been used in Europe for some time. Even Dapol recently laid claim to it!

Is this not an NMRA standard from many years ago, rather than true innovation?

ModellU have also produced invitational 3D figures for many years now (I have been puzzled as to why they have not been included before actually)

The voting system will of course even out the results, those, who like myself tend to the pedantic shall vote for our chosen nominations, and the majority result shall prevail. Which of course will be the true reward for the victors.

I nominated what I thought was a couple of wildcards in the reader's choice section and was surprised to see they made the shortlist. Not as "wild" as I thought then! Good-o.

I didn't think Dapol had released anything with it yet, IIRC Bachmann's V3 was the first with it in 2016 hence using the bracketed statement 'as used in' rather than me inferring that Next18 was a Bachmann product. 2017 has seen it appear in the Webb Coal tank and Farish's Castle and Class 40.

You are correct of course, Dapol have only recently jumped into the next-18 show, the question of if/when they are able to produce it and how it would work is open to the usual discussions that would best be opened in the Dapol thread.

More relevant is the question of whom will receive the award should the nomination be successful, DJ models (who specified it), Bachman (who produce it), or the NMRA (who originated the standard)?

Nice pole as always, though I do wonder if the Kernow diesel appearing right at the end of the year and in very few numbers, will get the full merit it deserves. Can we add 10203 to 2018s?

Tough choice on the steam models this year. Hornby having three I love to death for me (Navy, Coronation and the H class).

As a modeller of the pre group period, 4mm scale, 18.83 gauge I found little I could vote on, other than best layout and exhibition. Even those were from shortlists that excluded some of the best shows I have attended and layouts I have seen..

It's in the Ivatt tanks, too.

Personally, I wouldn't disagree Jol but I go by the nomination list and draw up a Top 10.

Groan - everybody had opportunities to offer nominations over Christmas, it's a bit of fun we're not voting for Brexit or a new government.

The big takeaway from this past year is actually the amount of variation and choice now available - manufacturer of the year used to be quite straightforward.

The big question for me is 2018 - will the crane win product and the lifting pantograph be the innovation or is there something else we haven't seen yet that will floor us all?

More choice if you buy RTR products. Those Small Suppliers who do such an excellent job in supporting those who prefer to create their own models, do something different, provide greater choice, etc. don't even get a look in.

I suppose that's simply the power of the market for consumer goods in play.

The issue is surely that most of the people who vote won't have experienced what many of those Small Suppliers offer and will support products they have seen or bought themselves.

By definition, small suppliers supply goods in relatively small quantities to a relatively small clientele, so will have fewer potential voters than the likes of even Kernow Models, who aren't large (yet) but certainly punch above their weight.

Maybe there should be a kit build supplier category ?

In the OO category, there’s some hard choices to make, but noticeably the variety is across a much wider field of players than I previously recall.
