50 Years since the end of BR Steam!

Recommended Posts

Could be.  It's under the ash plant in post #265.  It's the other side but the lining on the tender is there.

Thanks Chris.

Yes, I went through all your uploads and saw that one but I couldn't be certain from that angle.

However I think I am on solid ground with my reasoning, which is (going from the five examples which Carnforth had at the end, as per the RCTS book )..

75009 was stored with a bag on its chimney as in several of your views.

75020 was in the scrap lines as per your post #161 (and it was supposed to be green, anyway)

75027 was green

75048 had the double flashes on the tender back

So voila! it must be 75019

I have added the correct number to my archives so I will not have to worry about it any more!

Kind regards

Trevor

Interesting that 75009 was in amongst the preserved locos with her chimney sheeted up rather than on the dump - makes you wonder how close she was to being rescued?

That's an intriguing point.  I must admit that I had assumed that 75009 was preserved but obviously not.  According to the November 1968 Railway Magazine it was withdrawn in the period up to 10th August along with 75019, 75020, 75027 and 75048 and was cut up at Campbells of Airdrie by 30th November 1968 according to this website:

I've been trying to find out more information but have drawn a blank.  Can anyone else shed any light on this?

Mention of the CO-BO in an earlier post was it obvious back then that they were about to be withdrawn and what was the reactions to the withdrawal of several NBL diesels before steam had ended?

Love the shots from Manchester Victoria.  I never knew there were other locos still active by the 4th August '68, so seeing the Std. 5 and the 8F is a surprise.

Re: the Std. 4s at Carnforth, wasn't 75048 scheduled for preservation?  I remember my Dad's 1968 Combined Volume listing it in the Preserved Locomotives section, although it obviously never was (unless Ian Allan accidentally recorded a member of the Strategic Reserve....).

August 4th 1968, my last sight of BR steam in use, though really it was a gala day of specials. I was among the crowds on Manchester Victoria, armed with a Kodak Instamatic slide camera!

No particular order to these, just how I pulled them off my hdd,

If you want to listen to that Manchester Victoria departure, whilst looking at these pictures, you can listen to it here...,

And of course there's this publication to look forward to (just in case anyone following this thread missed it):

There are a few of of us frantically saving for this, personally, I'm torn between a kidney, child or family heirlooms to finance it.

4th August 1968 again and the third and final one of the steam specials we saw that day. Here are Britannia 70013 and Black 5 44781 at the head of 1Z74 the Locomotive Club of Great Britain The Farewell to Steam Rail Tour.

This tour was perhaps unique in sharing motive power with another being run on the same day, the Stephenson Locomotive Society (Midland Area) Farewell to Steam No.1. After detaching from this tour at Blackburn, 70013 ran light engine to Lostock Hall to await the arrival of the RCTS tour
