50 Years since the end of BR Steam!

Here's a 'heads-up' for any interested RMWebbers in the Newcastle upon Tyne area who have been following this thread.

The first meeting of the new season of the Stephenson Locomotive Society (SLS) this coming Friday (7th September) is an illustrated talk by Malcolm Paul on the subject: 'The end of BR steam traction on the main line in 1968'. This will be a real nostalgia-fest of 'end of steam' pictures by SLS members and others.

The SLS now meets above the Newcastle Arts Centre at 67 Westgate Road, a short walk from Central Station, with a 6.30 for 7pm start. (Full details on their website.)

Cheers

Trevor

If I was in England I would love to hear that talk Trev, I hope that you enjoy it.

Canton was rebuilt as a diesel depot and it's steam allocation stabled and serviced at East Dock, the old Rhymney shed closed in 1958 and brought back into use; the decrepitude of both buildings and stock was phenomenal, and would not be believed if accurately modelled; neither would the pile of name and number plates left on the roadside outside the depot from withdrawn locos.  You could tell withdrawn locos; they were cleaner and in better condition that those left in service...

Cardiff East Dock was a GWR 'Loan Act' style shed which replaced the former Rhymney Railway, Cardiff Docks shed in the early 1930s.

.

The two sheds were on different sites, but close to each other.

.

Cardiff East Dock was one of BR's first all diesel depots, housing just BR standard 350hp shunters, and some BR (WR) 151xx shunters as well.

.

When Cardiff East Dock closed in 1958, its diesel shunter allocation was moved to Cathays 88M.

.

The former GWR (not RR) Cardiff East Dock was then sold, to the Rover Motor Company, who used it for storage.

.

When Canton closed to steam in 1962, for rebuilding as a new diesel depot, BR were forced to rent the East Dock shed buildings from the Rover Co. until the depot closed to steam in August, 1965.
