Kings Cross New Approach Layout

Recommended Posts

Brief glimpse in RAIL magazine three month partial closure of Kings Cross to allow them to change the approach layout to include the reinstatement of the eastbound bore through Gasworks

https://www.railmagazine.com/news/network/plans-unveiled-for-237m-king-s-cross-remodelling

Number of errors most obvious the claim that the approach was last remodelled in 72 ...ok it was the 70's but a whole 5 years later

Edit to add the key word partial

The lunatics appear to be leaving the asylum at last. another "Beeching closure" being reversed?

Hardly. The clearing the throat changes in 1977 were sensible given that traffic had been diverted to Moorgate

As someone who whilst young regularly used the GN suburban services the new arrangement were far better than the old arrangement

The eastern most line was in effect a York Road only line

I have to say that I am surprised that the new layout proposed doesn't seem to make the most with the new Thameslink junction

If you look at it another way, it's been suitable for 40+ years, which over the same period of time took the GN from one tunnel bore to two with a further one being considered.

The 3rd tunnel was kept clear because there was a proposal for a new london airport, and this tunnel was going to be for a dedicated rail link. Now the thameslink 2000 has finally taken the suburban traffic out of the cross, it would allow for longer platforms for IC trains. The limit on ECML train lengths is now KX, and I know they used to have longer trains with kettles on the front, but would you be allowed to start a train with the front of it beyond the starter signal now? never mind the loading of a train longer than he platform.

G'Day Folks

One of the dopiest, decisions ever made was closing the UP bores in Copenhagen and  Gasworks tunnels................. glad to hear that they may be reinstated.

manna

It’s only the gasworks tunnel .

i think it also means the beginning of the end for Kings Cross PSB

Hi,

Yes, you can do that, either by talking past it (sort of) at Red or by providing 'Standing Forward Controls', but it is quite rare. The problem with doing at Kings Cross would be that you are restricting the use of other platforms as the train would be standing over the S&C

The end has already started, quite a substantial chunk of Kings Cross PSB was transferred to York ROC over the August Bank Holiday.

IIRC Simon, York will take over the whole of the ECML south of it (don't know about northern part), so Donny will also go in the not too distant future.

There's still just time to catch a Hull Trains service on the scenic route to St Pancras.

I've seen signs reading "No Access to Electric Trains" in various places and lack of wiring is the obvious reason, but what's the problem with diesels in Platform 0 - the pollution?  If so, why would they be OK in the rest of the station?  Would specialist equipment like P/way trains also be banned?

I was a commuter into Kings Cross for about 30 years and thought I knew my way round but I get lost there these days.  In that time, the Widened Lines (York Road) connection has gone; Platform 11 came and went; platform 0 appeared; the power box has gone; the Indian Village has gone, replaced by  the fancy new concourse; Bridge 1 (the old footbridge) was taken down; the gasometers, milk dock & loco yards have gone; so now have the loco sidings by the former York Road platform.  The rolling stock has all changed.  Platforms changed names from Kings Cross Metropolitan to Midland City to Thameslink and have now closed altogether. The entrances to the tube & its booking hall have been rebuilt; the wooden escalators have gone; there's the new deep-level Thameslink station.  For a short while during various works, they uncovered an original sign to the "City & South London Electric Railway".  Even platform 9 3/4 has moved a few times ... then there's what they've done across the road at St Pancras.

Yes. It's a confined space so exhaust is trapped, at least in the main train shed it is able to disperse.

Can you imagine a Deltic in Platform 0 :o
