I think this one is accurate Circa 84/85

27029 lasted until being withdrawn in 1986 and cut up in Thornton Yard in 1987. It was not uncommon on passenger trains despite its lack of heating capability, you could always try recreating the scene below where 029 was the meat in a tractor sandwich....

My lords ! I wonder what the reason behind that was ! I bet you could hear that from about 2 stations away !

I originally purchased a Kernow Turbot wagon 2 years ago , purely because I like them as a wagon and I’d seen just the one parked at Crianlarich in early 89.

I was watching a YouTube vid taken from a train to Mallaig in the mid 80s . Suddenly I saw a rake of 6 or so Turbots parked up at Fort William depot . That prompted me to look in to getting some more . This time though I decided upon the Dapol model . It really is an excellent model . It’s extremely fine scale in comparison to the kernow .

The down side to the Dapol model is the incorrect engineers yellow . I noticed on a new one I bought that it’s a touch darker on the recent batch but still way too fluorescent. Out came the air brush , which I have a love / hate relationship with ! Phoenix precision , pre 85 engineers yellow was sprayed over , after some tricky masking ! Next followed Phoenix weathered black on the under frames and bogies and some subtle frame dirt . Then some AK ‘Streaking grime’ was applied and mostly wiped off with cotton buds.

The inside planking was sprayed with AK ‘wood base’ acrylic then once fully set (one blistered as it wasn’t cured !) washed with MIg enamel dark wash. Next I dry brushed with frame dirt before I re sprayed with another coat of wood base . The body sides were also given a misting of this as it mimics the fading paint and stone dust . The rust was a mix of powders and AK streaking rust .

I researched some photos and surprisingly even by 88 some of these were in a rough condition with battered and rusting sides . I’ve tried to represent a variety of conditions based on the age.

The interior is a very difficult topic to find photos of . A friend of mine who owns a real OCA wagon is pretty sure they used the same pale wood planking originally. With this in mind I tried to represent a care worn interpretation.

The Turbots were 'created' in 1982 utilising redundant Bolster E chassis, I came across a photo on the web the other day of a 'newish' looking one on the WHL in 1983, so they would have been 5 or 6 years old and have done a fair bit of work by your chosen period for modelling. They are also one of my favourite wagons but I've struggled a little with the first N gauge kit that I've tried to build of them and need to revisit the part built ones that I've started.

Great inspiration, thanks for posting the photos.

Regards,

Ian.

Taken at Crianlarich, possibly in 1988 or 1989, sorry that they are just camera phone shots of my prints ...and no interior shots ....and probably a bit late now !

These are very interesting . I wish I’d seen images like this a week or so ago 😂. I thought they had only just started fitting the steps and hand grabs in early 89 . Therefore I removed most of mine ! Also these are more worn than some of the images I’ve seen . I was worried I was going too heavy on the weathering for 88!

cheers for sharing .

My dates may not be accurate so treat them with wariness. I first travelled on the WHL in 1987 and know they are not from then but I went back in my car several times over the next 3 or 4 years before I got màrried, so they could have even been taken in 1990 or 91. Sorry if this confuses matters but your comment regarding the steps may be more relevant to the precise date.

I'm afraid one of my notebooks for my photos disappeared a long time ago and I still need to scan all of my slides sometime.

Regards,

Ian.

You got me wanting to do ‘one more for the road ‘! So , in an order of ESu lighting strips another Turbot just happened to slip in ! It’s in the works at the mo . Re spayed the yellow yesterday when it arrived and started on the weathering . This is it ‘as it comes ‘ , a much better but still incorrect engineers yellow on this recent batch .

A few days later and it’s truly decayed ! Deluxe materials rust joins the paint and powders to create the rust effect .

I reckon that one has definitely spent the winter on Rannoch Moor !

Very nice and grotty. I like the interior as well.

Ian.

For comparison here is the Kurnow model on the left . The Dapol is more refined in all areas , bar the original ‘day-glo’ yellow . However , I had intended to use these with the close couplers provided, with my usual screw links at each end . Firstly, because these have metal chassis and are an absolute swine to drill out to fit the instanter coupling . Even an electric drill found it hard work !

When I put the Turbots together as a rake I noticed that the bogies were ‘skate boarding ‘ , with one wheel on each bogie riding slightly off the rail. Upon inspection I found that all but one had bent NEM pockets that pointed upwards. These all came from different batches so this fault is odd. Luckily , as I run my stock with screw links , it’s not the be all and end all . I’d be pretty miffed though if I didn’t and I’m surprised nobody else seems to have encountered this issue .

Just found this layout thread and YouTube channel. Fantastic layout, really captures that West Highland feel. Really enjoyed the videos as well. Any chance of a video layout tour?

Regards.
Bill.

Hi Bill . Thanks very much, that’s very kind .
It’s been a while since I’ve done anything on YouTube . However , I’m busy on several projects and once these are done I’ll probably do a couple of videos of the new stock .
The layout did appear in Model Rail mag , March 2019. They did one of their track plan diagram graphics.
Happy modelling!

The rust effects are first class, I'll be pleased to get close to these with my ZGV's and other metal bodied wagons. Had a quick look at the Deluxe materials product on line and it looks a bit of a faff to use, is that a fair summary?
