Four + two set yesterday after a fatal collision with a car on Stoke Canon level crossing which is a few miles north of Exeter.

Unusual to see these in these parts. Of course they may not now be unusual as I don't get to see the big railway much.

These will become more common and are I think due to operate between South Wales and South West, replacing some of the units currently operating the service. They are also due to be refurbished and have sliding doors fitted as per the Scot Rail short formations.

Yes that's it essentially they allow the displacement if DMUs to other services; they have one of the refurbished "Castle" class sets, another 10 are to due to get retention tanks and sliding doors, so like ScotRail they are using shortened Classic sets in the interim.

There are three short sets 2+4 working in Cornwall/Devon at the moment, all of which have been modified with sliding doors by Wabtec.  Another 3 or 4 sets I think are working Cardiff-Bristol-Taunton, these are currently slam door but will gradually be replaced.

See https://tauntontrains.co.uk/news, currently fourth story down.

I have to go to Reading on Friday and return on Saturday,  I have just checked with RTT and find that the train both ways is an HST, so I will still not  have travelled by 80x. I won't be that lucky when I travel upto Railex in May as the service will be fully 80x by then.

I'd be interested to know if you do get HSTs both ways, I'm not sure RTT has IET timing loads put in yet as everything is still timed for an HST.

  • 2 weeks later...

On Tuesday I headed west for a short break, I caught the 06.24 from Bristol Parkway to Penzance.

I was surprised but pleased when an (unrefurbished) 2 + 4 HST set ran into Weston, much better than the 150 set

that I have known on that service in the past. For a four hour 56 minute total journey that is good use of a proper train

cheers

Spotted what could possibly qualify as the fastest DMU in the UK as I passed Haymarket depot on the tram the other day: two 7 Cities liveried HST power cars parked up back to back.  I don't know whether they were actually coupled together, though.  I didn't manage to get a piccy, sadly, and they'd gone their (presumably separate) ways by the time I passed going the other way later in the day.

There seem to have been several movements from Ely to Scotland lately such as this one yesterday:

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/K01535/2019/04/13/advanced

I was on a southbound train that passed it so I couldn't see how it was made up apart from some blue coaches, but on 6th April I saw a similar move (Ely-Haymarket) leave York in the afternoon made up of 4 or 5 GW Mk 3s top and tailed by Rail Operations Group 37 and 47.

Not sure if it's been mentioned up-thread, but informed sources suggest that there will be two daily diagrams for short HST sets operating between Cardiff and Holyhead from June.  Not sure if this is an interim move before the MkIV sets enter service at the end of the year/ early 2020, but on the basis that the current loco-hauled MkIII are Arriva assets, it would appear likely.

My understanding  from comments elsewhere is the HSTs are more for freeing up units for 'PRMing', not to replace the WAG. Happy to be corrected though.

This is in addition to the loco-hauled (class 37) stock too!  Happy days....

Hi all,

Please note a few photos of the 11:14 from Dyce to Glasgow Queen Street taken today (21 April 2019) at Dyce.    Power cars were 43136 (de-branded FGW) and 43146 (Scotrail).   Note the 'ATP information label', which mentions London and Bristol and the apparent degree of corrosion around the coach ends, e.g. the rain-strip has fallen off the trailer first.

Thanks,

Bill

Today, by chance, I caught what I was told was the last scheduled HST departure from Weston-super-Mare to Paddington, the 08.15 WsM to Padd.

I remember my first day on BR in 1977, I commuted to Bristol on a HST, and many times since.

cheers

Given that the azuma goes into service on the Hull to London services from tomorrow 16th may I expect today is the last use of the tired old VP185 engined sets on the Hull executive? I know it goes out at 700 and into London 0953 as I got it regularly when I lived up there.

I am working in Doncaster today so I wondered what diagram it comes back up from London on so I can go out and catch it as it passes through please?

NL65 is on-lease by LNER until December, it will be retained as a spare until then.

I think that the weather on Thursday is going to be good for HST watching and I intend to go along the road near to Bedwyn.  From the information posted a few weeks back the most likely services for HST, between 09.00 and 03/00, are:=

1A75 / 1A79 / 1A81 / 1A82 / 1A85 / 1A87 and

1C74 / 1C78 / 1C81 / 1C82

Checking with RTT indicates that these are HST services...  is that likely to be so on the morrow?

Thoughts on the section by Crofton for photographs?

thank you, Graham

RTT won't actually tell you if it's an HST booked, the IETs are still timed HSTs.
