Accurascale Announce OO HUO - NEW PRE-TOPS RUN ANNOUNCED 23/07/2020

Recommended Posts

It’s great to see the new manufacturers come to the scene. I don’t think Hornby will be around much longer to be honest. It’s also good to hear the annual wish list will be considered so there is hope for us NE modellers yet. Good to see from the thread visits to Tanfield and NRM Shildon. Wonder if that was a hint.

That is a little scary. Where do you think Hornby are off to ?

Unlike others we are not announcing our entire 2018-2019 roadmap, just the first of many, and one that’s already tooled and deliverable in a few short weeks :) there is -much- more to come but we’d rather you not have to wait an age between announcement and Delivery so will take a little time to build up our range.

It’s hardly scaremongering Roy. It’s a bit obvious! How many profit warnings do they need to issue? Carillon were thought too big to fold. At the end of the day if you struggle to get your product to the market you rely on the banks. You can only do that for so long. They will struggle to shift £180 black five and 4MT’s as the second hand market is awash with them. They in a sticky position at the moment. I really hope I’m wrong but I have have seen stronger businesses than Hornby fail.

Quite frankly that is just unnecessary scaremongering.

Roy

You say that, and I'm inclined to remain open minded, but like some ancient but feeble civilisation too weak to fend off its enemies, in seeking the protection of an outside force, perhaps Hornby has admitted the Barbarian within its gates, and what is to stop its mercenary defender sacking and looting its host when the time comes?

The lessons of history are many and varied, of course: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/108082-hornbys-financial-updates-to-the-stock-market/page-142

Not sure how, but reading this thread I seem to have ordered 6 cement bubbles over the weekend.

I read somewhere, I think it was old adbs’Almanac1957 that cement bubbles came across on the Holyhead ferry, got regauged and went on mixed freights to Buxton....

At least that’s my excuse for mixing them into my collection...i’ll Mix them into my blue circle cement train (pun intended), see what they look like behind an 8f or a class 24...

Oh if your wish listing (I already did the survey so it’s too late), but RPSI’s Jeep WT 2-6-4t might find a few buyers on both sides of the channel.

Hi folks,

Well, since the cat is out of the bag in one of the magazines, we've decided to bring the first Accurascale announcement forward to, err, now!

Our first model for the British market will be the 24.5-ton coal hopper wagon, which later received the TOPs code ‘HUO’.

A total of 5,263 wagons were built by BR from 1954 for transporting coal and coke throughout Britain until their withdrawal in the 1980s, with many entering private use at collieries upon retirement by British Rail.

The model, which is of the 1/148, lot 2069 pattern, has just finished tooling and an engineering sample is currently en route from our factory in China. The surviving prototypes were surveyed at the Tanfield Railway, near Stanley, County Durham in mid-October 2017. Following the survey, highly detailed CAD was produced locally and reviewed by wagon experts who had first-hand operational and survey experience of the prototypes when in service. We would like to thank the Tanfield Railway for the assistance we received and have made a donation to the railway to help with preservation of railway heritage for future generations.

Flows which utilised HUOs include coke from East London to Wellingborough, Kirkby- Staythorpe, Killingworth to Stella, Kincardine, Stella North / Stella South / Dunston / Blyth, Thorpe Marsh Tunstead Works - Smaledale Works and Hessle Quarry to Hull Wilmington. They were also synonymous with coke flows from South Wales coking plants to Barry Docks.

Our rendition of the HUO will feature the correct offset brake hanger arrangement and the following high level of specification, enjoyed by the customers of sister company IRM, whose Irish outline models are the most highly detailed on the market:

·        Sprung buffers with spindle, self contained and Oleo types all being catered for, depending on prototype

·        NEM coupling housing

·        RP25.110 darkened profile wheel sets

·        Factory-fitted wire handrails

·        Extra fine factory-fitted detail plastic parts

·        Individual lettering and markings from real wagons for authenticity

·        Built to scale tolerances to allow easy conversion to EM and P4 standards

The HUO will go on sale in Q2 2018 in packs of three, with pre-TOPs, TOPs and private owner packs arriving on a staggered release basis throughout 2018 in a variety of liveries, such as BR freight grey and private owner wagons. They will also feature individual markings and detail faithful to research of the real wagons. The first release will see five different packs of three individually numbered wagons in BR grey with pre-TOPs markings so the modeller can build a 12-wagon train without duplication. Prices will be £59.95 for each pack of three wagons.

In addition to the HUO, the various buffers used by the wagons throughout their lives will also be offered as separate detail parts for the detail-minded modeller. This will be sold in packs of eight for £2.95. This will be the first in a series of detail part packs offered by Accurascale for modellers.

Both the HUO and the buffer detail packs are available to buy exclusively on the Accurascale website direct or from the Accurascale stand at various UK exhibitions from the second half of 2018.  Orders will commence on February 1st.

Looks good ! ........ though not particularly "Ordinary, numerous and typical." down in Kent  -  I guess Rule 1 might have to be pressed into service ....................................

........... one thing you don't seem to have mentioned : does "individual markings and detail" stretch to weathering - or are they all 'mint, boxed' just like they emerged from Shildon ??!?

Will overseas, (I mean BIG ones!!), be catered for direct? Items less VAT + reasonable postage charges, or will we be able to purchase from our trusted suppliers?

Congratulations, good luck, and cheers from Oz,

Peter C.

Hi Wickham Green,

The paint will be pristine on these as we are not major fans of factory weathering, they just cannot replicate the distressed state the HUOs got into in their lives.

Cheers!

Pity the Betteshanger to Richborough diagram 1/153 version had brakes.

Not sure whether you meant to say 'different brakes' or 'disc brakes' - but yeah ! ........... maybe a future Accurascale release - or Rule 1 implementation, if not ...............

The first batch had LNER style clasp brakes

All other unfitted wagons had longer off set brake levers with independent brake levers; the fitted ones had the same but with disc brakes at diagonally opposite corners for the automatic brakes!

I hope not. It remains to be seen how good they actually are. There isn't exactly a great track record of decent RTR buffers. Accuarascale will be doing very well to get halfway near your quality and anyhow I can't solder plastic to brass.

I get that to. Plate wagons, gunpowder vans... It's probably going to continue. Sadly by the time the RTR market implodes (which it one day will) they'll be no kit makers left to provide anything different because they'll have got fed up.

There are hundreds and hundreds of wagon types that no one has modelled. Look at the Specials Diagram book, Look at the ferry wagon books... and relatively few of the Private owner wagons have been modelled in RTR.

Erm   How do you know that DJM and Accurascale will, independently of each other, choose 29 different numbers for the HUOs ?

I believe there is somekind of anticompetitive law against collusion. I recall a few years ago Paul Bartlett making a comment about the then new Hornby 20T Midland Tar Distillers tank appearing in identical markings and number to a photograph of his. Might it therefore be possible that two model manufacturers looking for vintage images of HUOs might choose those same details for their models ?

Just sayin

I'm not aware that DJM have had any photos from me, unlike Accurascale.

Just in case you thought 24.5t hopper were confined to coal traffic (apart from the 1/153s in their early days in Kent), there are some good photos on the Derby Sulzers website showing HUOs carrying limestone on the Wirksworth branch:
