Blue repaints 1966/67

Can't see that this has been directly covered, but I could easily be missing it!

A thread to ask- which were the very, very first locos that appeared in blue, in 1966 and the first quarter of 1967? Leaving aside D1733- is it known which locomotive was the first to appear in BR blue- and when? My guess would be last quarter of '66, but could it have been any earlier?

A fair bit on other threads on this and I can't easily copy and paste from mobile but....D270, D3464 and D864 have to be early contenders... Also D6992, D6753 and the peaks that were painted in economy blue as no-one had the right specification...

I know this is plumbing new depths of pedantry, but D4100 was a class 09.

Pedant alert on....flashing lights, whoop whoop sirens etc

In 1966 D4100 was neither an 08 or 09 .... she was a BR/EE 350hp 0-6-0, TOPs classes didn't exist! Renumbering started in the early 70s although the class designations did appear late 60s.

Pedant mode off ....phew!

And my wife thinks I'm the worst pedant there is! You're right of course Phil, and I stand corrected.

Deltics were early repaints in to blue, possibly due to the combination of the prestigious services they operated and more frequent works attention. D9002 being the first in Oct '66

Although the next one 9008, wasn't done until July 1967. The last was 9014 in Nov 1969.

The last 18 Sulzer type 2s were delivered in Blue from Nov 1966, as were the last 50 EE type 1s from Dec 1966. The last 9 Brush Type 4s were delivered in blue too, starting from Nov 1966.

Just to clarify, the Brush weren't numerically the last.

Mike.

No thats right, you had the situation of Brush built locos arriving in blue with Crewe built ones in green. Indeed Brush asked BR what they should do with the now redundant green paint they had stocks of.

Built in Blue you had
400-449
1953-61
7660-77
8178-99, 8300-27

The first of each class to go blue as far as my research says were;
D4
D101
D184
D237
D602
D864
D1030
D1528
Shunters-some debate, poss D3464? Unsure re 03s, Class 10 poss D3638.
D2554
D2992
D5068
D5389
D5649
D5701
D6300/3/14/27 unsure which was first.
D6937
D7033
D8049
Claytons-no idea, several done at once in late 1967.
D9002

Claytons probably the easiest to do as so many of them sat still for so long....

It’s interesting to see that the 55 and 31 in the photos had full yellow ends at a time when Swindon were still only applying yellow panels. Maybe Swindon didn’t get the email on that?

According to my friend who revels in such things, there was apparently an edict issued to all the BR works that all locomotives were to be outshopped in Rail Blue from 'now', not certain of the date but probably 1966 or 1967.

Apparently Swindon continued, stubbornly to turn out 350s in green until 1970....

Incidentally I'd always assumed that a fair number of Brush Type 4s were new in blue, I hadn't realised it was only nine of them. Learned something new again today!

I've seen a photo of D9010 in green and full yellow ends, but with BR double arrows.

Seems this was an ER thing, plenty of 31s in this condition along with class 15s and Baby Deltics.

Think 9010 was the only Deltic thus treated mind.

Maybe Swindon Works purchased all the green paint at Loughborough, in order to mix it in with the vast stocks of 'chromatic blue' they apparently had, in order to create Rail Blue which has a greenish tinge to it.

Swindon repainted with panels because of a dispute with PW staff, somewhere I have the details. I'll dig them out. The early blue 45s were done en masse at Toton in June/july 1966 and the idea was abandoned.

Chromatic blue doesn't exist. D1030 was spray painted rather than brush painted and it gives a metallic finish which looks different in the sun, however compare a BSYP loco to a BFYE loco if you can find a picture and you can see that the shade of blue is identical.

It's one of those long standing myths that regardless of evidence will not die, file under 40106 in blue, D4 with panels etc.

June 9 1966 was the date that the order to paint everything blue went out. It only took 14 years to do.

Yes only D9010. Many plenty 15s, 16s, 31s and also examples of classes 03, 23, 24, 37.
