CAF presents first class 331 for Northern

Great to see these coming into the theatre of conflict at last; Arriva can finally crack on and start the cascade process that retires the Pacer fleet.

A few more photos of the new CAF built class 331s for Northern at Doncaster.

331102 seems to have been the favoured one for driver training so far...

331105 and 331107 were stabled in Doncaster West Yard with pantographs raised.

Be interesting to see how quickly these units get introduced to public service.

They are looking good, but in the next to last photo’ you can make out the edges of the ironing board seats. I’ll use them after their eventual introduction to service, but I’ll always take a cushion with me for my rear end and back.

Best regards,

Rob.

I like the look of these too. Just wonder whether the windows are not too low. Could cause some to suffer travel sickness.

Perhaps no conventional rtr model unless they also appear elsewhere in the country. But new technologies coming forward may make short production runs more of a possibility for the future.

Class 108 Derby Lightweight DMU’s had a quite low window sill level, but I can’t recall anyone getting sick because of it. I loved it since you could see much more of adjacent tracks, signalling wires and all such things. So I’m confident that all will be well in that respect.

If anything, on the terrible Pacers, the sill level has been far too high up making it very difficult to see much at all out of the windows.

Best regards,

Rob.
