Yes Jonathan.

As mentioned above it forms a jig so you can solder the two halves of the crossing V together.

Regards Lez.Z.

Thanks for the replies, I said it would be obvious, so no more burnt fingers while soldering up vees.

Alteration work to the room is finished just some painting to do and then carpet removal. In the meantime I have been busy with my new filing jig for vees. Lately I have made the most complex single piece of track-work, a three way turnout. I don't know if electrically all is soldered up or isolated which ever the case may be, but it will be tested thoroughly before going anywhere near the layout. The turnout was planned using Templot's fairly recently introduced new feature.

From left to right, the exits go to: the MPD and coal yard; carriage siding; platform 3. I rather like the long checkrail on the MPD road.

A bit too warm to do anything energetic in the railway room so hung some pictures instead.

After the sun had got around to the other side of the house, I roughly laid out the trackwork on the floor of the railway room.

post-16241-0-09702700-1528307934_thumb.jpg

From right to left we have:
Coal yard siding 1
Coal yard siding 2
Coal yard siding 3/outside loco storage
Turntable road
Engine shed roads
Loco Coal road

All the above will be at a lower level than the mainline/platform roads and will be added once the lines to the right have been laid.

Next the Up and Down mainlines in the distance leading to the MPD yard, carriage siding, platforms 3 and 2.

In the middle distance the Up line splits off to Platform 1/cattle pens. In the foreground the Up line junction to the Upper goods yard with 3 sidings and the goods shed road far right.

I wish I could get my pictures level like that mate, :O hahhaha    Excellent stuff, Track work should be good once you've got the boards in place.

Which part of Wales are you going to for the Narrow Gauge fix?

Off to a couple of miles outside Aberystwyth so it will be the Vale of Rhiedol, Talylyn and probably the Ffestiniog, I'd like to do the Welsh Highland as I've never travelled the whole length, but doubt we'll get it in without omitting the FR.

I printed out the majority of the Templot plan, stuck it together in three sections and laid it out on the floor of the developing railway room. Pleased to say it fit!

The 3F tank and suburbans are in the bay (platform 1)/cattle dock with the signal box between the up main and upper goods yard.

There's plenty of space behind the layout to access the upper yard and the rest of the space on the opposite side of the formation will be the storage yard. The LNWR line crosses near the upper yard access turnout near what will be the duck-under section, which might become lift-out (I'm the wrong side of 60.)

Hi Jonathan

It must be a relief now to have all the work complete and be able to think seriously about starting the layout, try not to mess that nice new clean floor up too much though with the baseboard building.

Looking forward to following progress from here on.

Jim

Baseboard building began today. First up is the 10-road storage yard made from the blockboard from the old under eves cupboard doors and the old layout's frame timbers. The right-hand board is not fixed as a hole is needed for the turntable.

A few more hours spent in the railway room this week and the staging for the off-scene part of the layout is just about finished. The adjustable feet have proved a real boon as the floor is anything but level especially where the old cupboards were. I have managed to use up all the block board from the old doors which has made a nice solid flat surface. A hole for the turntable was cut and the first piece of cork sheeting was laid. There are two cork sheets in the photos, only the one leading up to the turntable is glued down.

Another couple of days sees a start made on the framework for the station and upper goods yard area. It is at a lower height than the storage area to accommodate an under bridge (Bridge Street) which has access to the upper goods yard.

A couple of sessions saw a start made to the boards for the station area and upper goods yard. These were made from the old under eves cupboard insides which are 9 mm ply.

The abrupt cut-out to the front is where the slope to the lower coal yard and MPD will go. All views are looking towards the station buffer stops.

That's coming on well Jonathan, very neat woodwork.

Very kind, Andy, although the photos make it look better than it is, but at least the track-bed is level. I've run out of 9 mm ply when the last two sections have been put on their risers, so it will be off to the timber merchants in Skipton.

More time was spent on the trackbed and now the scenic section is connected to the storage section.

Looking towards the buffer stops.

The "bridge" between the two sections. This will be the site of the Bridge Road over-bridge and the LNWR bridge over the Midland. It would have been nice to have this a lift-out section but there's too much going on. It won't be fastened down until it needs to be.

Looking from the buffer stops to the station approach.

Hello Jonathan

I have only just 'discovered' your thread and would like to compliment you on the way you have tackled the project - particularly the way you have 'spun' the plans to make good use of the space and your craftsmanship with the track. I will follow your progress and wish you all the best.

This may be a 'trick of the light' or such like, but - from what I can see - it might be possible to replicate the unique track layout of the coal yard (with a degree of compromise). Having four 'shortish' sidings will be more interesting and useful for shunting. But you would have to make the points!

Brian
