Hi Lez, "Ben Alder" used a Gaugemaster controller and brake for his which he says works really well, so I may give that a go. Having looked for a controller for a panel RS do one much cheaper than the Gaugemaster one so that's now on order.

On one of my layouts DC I wired the turntable motor as if it was a track section so I just flicked the switch and then turned the deck using my controller. On one of my other layouts (n gauge and no domestic supervision) I used the ADM Turntable.

My Layout is DCC. I do have an ADM table but that's at the end of the fiddle yard but it would have been too big for the MPD.

I have used a spare non-sound decoder and wired the turntable motor to it thanks to a suggestion by Michael Edge of this parish. A bit more scenic work done to the turntable. It's been painted and handrails added. I have put a stone edging around the pit and sleepers between the tracks to allow the engine men to push their charges round.

More work on and around the turntable has been done. Some photos were taken from the back of the layout, not normally seen, but shows up where extra work is needed.

Only just picked up on this thread wow a very impressive effort indeed. I like the way you have included the work involved in preparing the room for the layout which is often as not mentioned but is a vital ingredient to making the dream come true. 

The turn table is a master piece and having a locomotive depot myself I know the endless hours of operational interest it can give to a layout. 

Keep up the good work and your now added to my follow list.

Thanks for your kind comments Gismorail. The turntable went together very well even if the instructions were a bit spartan at times. It needs more work scenically. I don't know what to do to the bridge, so I have left it in undercoat for the time being. Midland tables were usually covered in wooden planking but it would be a pity to cover up that nice etched work. Where's Coachmann when you need him? He's not posted for sometime on the other site for some time either.

In between the heavy rain showers I got a bit more of the fine scenic work done. Some of the siding ends have Midland buffer-stops thanks to Lanarkshire Models. I don't know if the LMS painted the planks red but mine have had a watery coat.

 

 

Some photos that I have seen show piles of ash around the ash pit and coaling stage. I first made heaps from air-drying clay, than painted them grey. 

 

 

Then covered them with Carrs' firebox ash.

 

 

 

There's a wheel barrow here on a couple of the photos, so I will have to find a 4mm version.

Dodging the showers again in NW North Yorks. while trying to put up a rainwater collecting butt in the back garden, my attention turned to the rear of the shed. This is a small coal yard. I still had the coal merchants' offices and a set of staithes from my old layout. I made another set of staithes from a long-ago bought kit. Metcalf setts were again used as a base. While in this area, my remaining 3 buffer-stops were made and put in place on the end of the shed and loco coal roads. The "coal" is Woodland Scenics just to see what things look like.

More ash ballast/ground cover has been done to the area between various tracks like where the signal box sits and between the sidings in the upper yard. I also got out my Scalescenes terraced houses to see what they would be like in the background.

 

 

 

 

I ought to have closed the blind to stop the glare but we've not seen much sun in this part of N Yorks for some time.

Carr’s fine ash

As Simon says (there ought to be a game called that) the very light scatter is Carr's  fire box ash. The dark ground cover is now a right mixture of Carr's  dark grey (2mm scale), DCC Concepts' Legacy dark ballast and Greenscene dark ballast. Phoenix have a good selection of Carr's scatters. All are nut shell by-products.

I use dilute vinyl carpet glue to hold it down. Once the scatter is hoovered off I pour over Carr's fine ash ballast which fills in the gaps between the larger particles, then hoover off again. You might need a double layer to bring up to sleeper top level.

At long last I have managed to get the cattle dock completed. It's a mixture of Poppy's Woodtech base and Ratio-bashed fencing. I couldn't get away with the Poppy's fencing.

A bit of Plastikard bashing this afternoon has produced a heavy sleeper-built buffer-stop thanks to Jerry  @queensquare of

 

Queen Square fame. I thought the end of the gradient to the lower level could use something solid to stop engines running onto Station Approach. I blatantly copied the 2mm scale buffer-stop he made for his MPD area. Here's mine in 4mm.

Work has started on the coaling stage. The sides were built up from 2mm grey card.

 

 

Sides were covered in Scalescenes' red brick to match the engine shed.

 

 

 

Which is where I stopped for the day. Away day to Edinburgh tomorrow to include a visit to Harburn Hobbies.
