RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted December 12, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 12, 2019 The lamp-man's platform has been completed and when cleaned up and painted will be put on the post once the LED wires are in place. 5
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted December 12, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 12, 2019 I got the Halford's Etch Undercoat warmed up and gave the parts a quick mist over. Beginning to look the part now. LED wires and lamps to be fitted next then the operating cranks and wires. The shed Jocko shunts the yard while a 3F is about to depart .

Joe MCMLXI
That's a great set of signals you've produced so far Jonathan, great work. Love the flow of the trackwork in the photo's as well... Excellent. Joe

Where the signal goes there is, of course, a baseboard support rail so the support tube for the signal post in over 6" in length. I've welded two small diameter tubes inside this to guide the wires from the servos to the weighted signal cranks. Next I have the fiddly job of the cranks and operating wires 1
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted December 31, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 31, 2019 A bit of time off clerical duties has meant the bracket signal has been finished. The left doll is for the down line, the right gives access to the main platform No 2. A bit of fine tuning on the servos needed and all will be well. 12

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted December 31, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 31, 2019 Cracking job Jonathan, I love the long shots down the layout. I would be interested in a bit more detail about how you wired up and mounted the LEDs though, if you get chance. Al.

RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted January 1, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 1, 2020 (edited) It's scenes like this that I looking forward to being able to almost recreate in model form: A scene from Midland days pre-First World War. By the time my railway is set the complex crossing had been renewed and the excursion platform gone. (Peak Rail Collection as on the Disused Station site.) The engine on the left has reversed its stock out of the main platform (2) and will draw forward into the track on the far left, uncouple and run round behind the box and push the stock in to the bay platform (1) ready for the next journey to Miller's Dale. The train on the right is signalled into the main platform (2). Edited January 2, 2020 by Rowsley17D

I would be interested in a bit more detail about how you wired up and mounted the LEDs though, if you get chance. Al. I have done a step by step of wiring up the LEDs I use in the signals. Doing a single post signal is easier than a bracket and is basically like the steps in the first four photos. The LEDs are nano-LEDs sunny white from DCC Concepts which is just down the road from me. They fit inside signal lamps from ModelU as these are hollow. Don't put the lens in as its self-adhesive back wont let the light through. Ask me how I know. Once the lamp bracket is in place on the doll, a 5mm hole is drilled into the post at an angle to encourage the LED wires to go down the post. These are used by @Steve Hewitt and are 3D printed and hollow. The LED wire is threaded though a hole in the base of the lamp bracket. Then using tweezers is wire is threaded through the post. Then along the trimmers and down the main post. The lamp is glued in place and the whole process is repeated for the other doll. I leave the threading of the LEDs until the assembly is spray undercoated. The landing is made as a separate unit and is glued to the trimmers when all has been painted. Hope all is clear? RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted January 1, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 1, 2020 That's brilliant mate, thank you very much for taking the time to do that. Those LEDs are really really small, much smaller than the ones I used, and the fact they fit inside Modelu lamps is excellent. Al.
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted January 3, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 3, 2020 (edited) Having made a start on the next bracket signal along the down line to show how the lamp wires are threaded, I got more done over the last couple of days and it's just about ready for the paint shop. The taller doll controls access to platform 3 and the smaller to the carriage siding and the shed area. Driver's view. Note to self: Facing point lock required A bit closer. Looking back The taller doll has acquired one of those new-fangled steel boards. Another facing point lock needed. RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted January 4, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 4, 2020 A gloomy dank morning at Derwent Spa sees the shuttle from Millers Dale crossing to the up line and platform 2 under the watchful eye of the bobby in the box, while the station Jocko plays with a raft of wagons in the top yard. In real life, the lamp showing red is much brighter, although the arm needs positioning properly, perhaps it's how the camera "sees" things?
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted January 9, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 9, 2020 A bit more time has been spent on the latest signal. First after a coat of paint. Then with the lit lamps in place. Staging has been taken off so I can start on the operating wires. The left lamp platform needs lifting a bit.
gordon s
If ever 'less is more' needed explaining, just show three shots. beautifully laid and ballasted track that just shouts quality and attention to detail. Love it...... Edited January 9, 2020 by gordon s Can't count...Three shots not two.. 4

gordon s
Not at all. I mean it... How often do you see layouts crammed with track (guilty as charged) whereas real memories come from simple things. My wife and I took the train from Taunton out towards Minehead. We got off at Blue Anchor and then walked with our two dogs to Minehead and back. I still recall standing on Blue Anchor station in the sun, with all the flowers in full bloom and just the sound of the bees for company. We were the only people on the station and we really could have been back in the 50's. After a while we heard the train approaching from Minehead and looked down the line to see the steam loco approaching with it's carriages behind. A really simple memory, but one that will stays with me. It was all the model GWR BLT's rolled into one, but with one additional ingredient. Reality.....
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted January 17, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 17, 2020 In a change from signals and looking at photos of the box at Buxton Midland, there were a lamp hut, privy and coal bunker at the foot of the box stairs. So I had a go at the lamp hut first which appeared to be a standard asbestos Midland one which the LMS later adopted. It's mainly built from 30 thou Plastikard and styrene strips. I guess that the sides were about 6' 6" square. After a blast of primer. 9

RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted January 18, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 18, 2020 (edited) Got some painting done to the lamp hut and a kind member gently pointed out that the door opens out rather than in, so it was a quick skim job with some 10 thou Plastikard to correct the mistake. Sorry it's a bit out of focus and I must get a ladder to the signal opposite the box. Edited January 20, 2020 by Rowsley17D
