RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 24, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 24, 2020 I think the moulding dimple is fine where it is, actually, It's on an iron corner plate, so it could well have been dinted by a careless loader at some point. I would leave it as it is. Al.

RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted April 26, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 26, 2020 (edited) The ICI lime wagon has been completed except for couplings which are on order as are buffers which I may well replace. RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted April 27, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 27, 2020 (edited) A shiny new 7 plank was finished today. Although it's had a coat of matt varnish it's still very shiny. I'm going to try some weathering powders to see if they will take the shine off. After some very light weathering. RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted May 3, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 3, 2020 A practically brand-new Gloucester 7-plank end door wagon to RCH 1923 has joined its earlier numbered 8- plank sister in the Bolsover fleet. Waterslide transfers from Model Master. I've another Bolsover wagon at the locked-down own-home layout. Bolsover wagons were known to have travelled in "convoy" so perhaps three of their wagons at Derwent wouldn't be unusual. They could have supplied the town gas works which was on the approach to the actual Buxton Midland station.
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted May 3, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 3, 2020 Having run out of length on the dining room window sill to store repaired and new-built wagons, I put them on the sideboard: vans at the back, then company open wagons and finally PO wagons.
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted May 4, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 4, 2020 (edited) Probably the last 7-plank I am building will be another John Kay PO wagon. Model Master mistakenly put two lots of transfers into a packet and didn't want the extra one back. As I said earlier, some of the Cambrian moulds are ageing, especially the underframe ones. The brake blocks don't go any way near the wheels treads and the handles are very chunky so I replaced these parts with better ones from my bits stock. RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted May 10, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 10, 2020 (edited) The end processes of two of the latest wagons proved a real pain. I'd nicely got the John Kay PO wagon lettered with the bonus transfer when I varnished it with matt after adding some matting agent. Trouble was the agent was for acrylic and I was using "enamel" varnish. It dried with a white bloom. So out came the weathering powders and a heavily weathered vehicle entered the fleet. The next disaster was after putting on the dry print lettering to a Derbyshire Stone wagon which promptly came off one side when covering with different varnish. One side lifted completely but the other side was salvaged with only the letter Y being discarded and replaced with a waterside one. I'll have to make sure this wagon never gets turned until the blank side has been lettered. The last wagon to be built for the time being is a 5-plank fixed ends to RCH 1923 belonging to Geo Lovegrove. A RTR wagon in this livery is/was available and I have one on the home layout but I have discovered a photo of this wagon No 215 at http://www.wirksworth.org.uk/X447.htm which clearly show a wagon with angle iron end supports and three-hole disc wheels while the models have wooden supports and spoked wheels. The first job was to remove the wooden supports with a scalpel. I had no T beams in my plastic collection so I cut an I beam in half. Buffers were replaced with Lanarkshire ones. The dry print livery went on much better than the Derbyshire Stone one. Hopefully mine is a slightly more accurate version than the RTR ones. I don't know what I shall do with my RTR one once lockdown is lifted, probably back-number it. Edited May 10, 2020 by Rowsley17D Typo
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted May 14, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 14, 2020 With the slight, if confusing, relaxation of the Covid-19 regulations we drove the 12 miles across the fell to our retirement home to see how it had survived with us being away 8 weeks. A neighbour had kept the front lawn mown which was good of him and as it has been so dry the weeds were not too bad. A self-employed kitchen and bathroom fitter had taken advantage of us not being there and had fitted a new shower room ( we don't bathe). The layout is how I left it but I took a a few photos of the shed area of the layout as the station platforms are under refurbishment.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted May 14, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 14, 2020 The second and third photos in particular are very reminiscent of the real 17D. Cracking shots Jonathan. Al. 1
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted May 29, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 29, 2020 We are visiting our own home twice a week and in between helping in the garden, I had some time in the railway room. Before lockdown I had removed the station platforms. Despite what I thought was careful measuring and working out, some coaches and engines clipped the edging "stones". So this is as far as I have got rebuilding them. Instead of using three layers of foam board, I used strips of it on their edges.
RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted May 29, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 29, 2020 It’s a real shame that you’ve had to take up your platforms The replacements are coming along nicely though
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted May 29, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 29, 2020 Thanks, Chris. The some of the paving stone layers had faded and looked odd. I think some were inkjet printed and others were colour photocopies but I cannot remember which were which now! Sanding down the old edging to try and remove tight spots had revealed the white card that the layers were glued to and looks bad. I going to take more time and try and get it right this time. 1
clecklewyke
Looking good. I love the quirkiness of the station layout- we all know that having a single line between two platform places is “wrong” but the Midland knew better. And those wagons are superb. RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted June 2, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 2, 2020 Hi Ian, thanks for the comments. The single line was originally the only main platform at Buxton save for the bay. I guess they didn't expect the level of business that the LNWR side anticipated with its two platforms to increase as it did when the third platform was required in the cheap wooden extension. There was also a wooden excursion platform on the down side away from the main station so the riff-raff didn't mix with polite society of Buxton using the main station.

RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted June 4, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 4, 2020 (edited) Posted this in my layout thread when it should be in my kit building thread on this loco. The Modelmaster red lining arrived smartly and I have got one side done to see how it looked. It would have been better if the black was gloss but I will try some satin varnish over the top. The cab cut-out and upper cab sides have not been done as there's no lining curved correctly for this area. RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted June 5, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 5, 2020 (edited) Another day's visit to the retirement home where the layout is situated meant that I could just about finish the main and bay platforms. Once the card platform surface had been covered with Scalescenes paving and edged it was glued on in one piece and held down with various cans from the pantry. The only thing remaining to do is the platform ledge on the bay side of the platform which cannot be seen from the front but if I take photos from the access area at the back it will show.
