Some longitudinal beams have been added in between the trusses which has strengthened everything nicely. First I started with I beams along the ridge.

Then micro-strip.

Thanks, Keith.

I glued the awning brackets to the girders this pm and wished I hadn't. It looks as though the awning will be far too high above the trains on platform 3, even with valancing 10mm deep. If I glued them to the columns then the clearance will be 10mm. Not very good photos as they were taken against the light even with the blind down, but it has been a lovely day.

I've bought enough trusses for intermediate ones but I think they obscure too much of the trains.

Jonathan,

A while back you were asking about a source of clear acrylic for your roof.

Not sure what thickness you're after, but this company can supply a 2mm thickness, cut to whatever size you want.

www.cutmyplastic.co.uk

I've used them for some 5mm thick acrylic for fiddle yard cassettes. Cutting is very accurate and finish is excellent. Quite cheap and delivery by courier.

I can see what you mean about the canopy over platform 3, but I think it would look OK if the brackets were lowered slightly on the girders, always assuming you can 'un-stick' what's been stuck, of course!

Looking very good though!

Geraint

Oh yeah, I meant to post about this and forgot, Slaters do transparent styrene sheets as well.

I would suggest googling “clear plastic sheet”. From this you should find plenty of companies who will cut plastic sheet of a variety of thicknesses in any shape and size you want. Much better than scoring and snapping.

Thanks Alister & Geraint. I want the glazing to be self-supporting as It were and not rely on the girder work so I will probably go with the 2mm stuff. With a sharp scalpel I should be able to remove the brackets, fingers crossed. I have some spare if I make a Horlicks of it.

Thanks Ian, that's the way I'm going.

Well, the brackets glued with super glue just snapped off and the two where I used Evo Stik cut-off okay with a Swan-Morton blade. Little else done due to a bug in the waterworks with which nice Auntie Biotic is having a battle. Would not wish it on my worst enemy - not that I have one.

The meds have done the trick and although still a bit woolly headed, it was back to modelling for recuperation. I have done away with the canopy idea as there was no sensible place for the canopy supports to go, one place being too high, the other too low. The ways and means committee is still looking for a solution. So it was on with the main building. I first marked out the window and door openings on mounting board.

Then set to and cut them out. I'm glad I treated myself to a Swann-Morton knife set during Lockdown as it has proved invaluable and wish I had done it years ago. The blades can be kept sharp for some time with a couple of passes through an "Any Sharp" knife sharpener from Lakeland.

Some more has been done to the platform elevation. The arch relief layer has been cut out.

Then both have been separately covered with Scalescenes' dressed stone paper.

Then a start was made on the arch stones.

Hi Jonathan.

After extensive searching through my collection of MR publications for a drawing of the NG coal tubs used in the coal houses I have drawn a blank. There are many photos of them in use in LMS Engine Sheds Vol. 2 but no drawings. I did find a drawing of the type used by the LNWR but it is quite different. Sorry mate I'm sure I have one but I have no idea where it is. It may be in one of the prototype mags I have but I don't even know where to start looking for it. You should have enough info from the photos in LMS sheds to make a good stab at them though.

Regards Lez.

Hi Lez

Thanks for your efforts, no doubt you'll find what you want when you're looking for something else. As for me I've some phosphor bronze strips somewhere and can I find them?

I don’t wish to be rude or hypercritical, but those window frames aren’t aligned very well... ;)

Will it be better a bit more like this?

Those windows and doors look spot on mate, did you say they were York Modelmaking ones?

Al.

Hi Alistair, they are the York Mm ones. A couple of the double doors need a panel taking out as they were glass most of the way down. The small and large windows come in 3 sections - the upper sash, the lower one and a frame.

I've not the patience, Al.

Some more "decorative stonework" has been added and I think this is as much as I can do. At least it's beginning to look the part. I couldn't resist making up one of the large windows and painting it Midland colours, Venetian red outer frame, rest in white.

Some more of the platform elevation before the above was done.
