Thank you, gentlemen for your kind comments. The trees backscene has been completed in that it has been stuck to the backboards. Here's a shot from the shed water tower towards the other end of the layout and what it might look like when I have decided what will go where.

Thanks to a heads-up by @Alister_G I bought some of Stacey's Miniature Masonry Light Grey Modelling Dust and applied some on top a layer of dilute PVA on the exit to the coal yard as a try-out. I am very pleased with the results. The surface is much smoother than the photos show and pass @MrWolf's riding a 4mm scale bicycle over it.

Also arrived today were some flexible stone walling from www.osbornsmodels.com as mentioned by  @chuffinghell on his thread. One was painted a mid-grey then dry-brushed with a much lighter grey/almost white. Here it is next to an untreated section. To me it looks like a Derbyshire drystone wall.

That's great Jonathan, the walling looks really good with a bit of paint added, excellent find by Chris @chuffinghell

I think I've just succumbed to buying some.

Al

Hi Al, they are not inexpensive but it certainly saves a lot of time and trouble unless you're stuck for something to do! With a pair of small scissors I trimmed off some of the coping stones sides and tops to make them more rounded and less castellated. I used acrylics to paint the walls.

Jonathan,

When you say 'flexible' does that apply in the vertical direction too? Mine need to accommodate slight variations in ground level.

Looks good though!

It’s very flexible in all directions

That’s definitely flexible!

This stuff is about £8 per length but the site doesn’t say how long that length is - can one of you chaps enlighten me?
Thanks

Jay

Each length is approximately 185mm long

The £8.95 pack has three lengths (plus a gate)

and the bulk pack has 7 lengths (no gate) for £16.50

Wish I’d painted mine now, looks great.

I don’t know if it helps but I found the best thing to stick them together with was a contact adhesive....can be a bit messy though

Is this the same wall that you sent me a link to the other day @Rowsley17D?

If so it looks a hell of a lot better on your layout then their website!

Chris @chuffinghell seems to have answered all your questions. It does what it says on the tin. As I said, it's not inexpensive but it does look the part at least for what I want. Unless you have the patience and skill of @Alister_G or @Physicsman then this is the stuff to go for. Leave some for me though, as I under measured what I needed!

Hope you didn’t mind me jumping in to answer the question

I might be a length short too but when I spoke to them they say they make it ‘in house’ so I don’t think they are going to run out

The narrow strip between the cess and and the wall has been treated with a mixture of dark mixed-size ballast and static grass.

One day those shiny gaps in the rail sides will be filled in.

Really atmospheric shot, despite the earthquake damage to the signal box.

So inspiring in fact, I have figured out what isn't right about my goods yard I am off to fix it right now!

Hope it isn't too drastic.

Nope, it's done and my layout consists of track lightly fixed where necessary. A while back my other half offered to help with ballasting once I was happy with the track. Unfortunately earning a living got in the way.

I also was having the same problems with space in the goods yard as @chuffinghell so it was in limbo.

I realised, looking at your photos that the line into the goods shed area was curved for no good reason and the mileage siding didn't need to run parallel with the edge of the layout.

Hope you don't mind me hijacking your thread.

End result, much bigger goods yard in the same space.

Excuse the lousy phone pictures.

You’ve used the walling to great effect, it looks brilliant :good:

Thanks, Chris. It's down to you that the wall is there in the first place, a great internet find. Do you know where I can get a 1930s phone box and pillar box? :D

Some shots with the wall and developing glued-on backscene.

I think Dart Castings still do a range of post boxes and a 1928? pattern phone box.

Thanks, they were out of the phone boxes so I've ordered printed ones and pillar boxes from Model Railway Scenes. There's 2 phone boxes so one will be offered for sale or free to a good home as will most of the pillar post boxes as there's 10 in a pack!

More scenes from the layout.
