My apologies for hijacking your thread, but I could not turn in looking like a vandal, here is one I have rescued. I have replaced the warped, broken and frankly awful when new Grafar chassis with something a bit better, namely a Cambrian RCH type. It might not be 100% accurate, but it has salvaged a wagon in a livery I haven't seen elsewhere.

Philistine? Not I.

Thanks

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the underframe should be wooden. There's a lovely photo of the brand new 373, part of an order of 25 in 1937 from Gloucester Railway C&W Co Ltd in Turton A First Collection.

I think that the words I desperately seek are....

That seems typical, the problem is that I have never really known what source books there are for such things and I have rarely looked because such books are generally way out of my price bracket.

I have been lucky enough to have amassed a good number of books over the years though, buying them either new or at general secondhand book shops. The subject matter being mostly the Great Western (Hail Satan and all that) and I have most of the really desirable / useful tomes.

Three years ago, when I returned to the UK, I decided to sell them because I had no intention of making any more models. I contacted a well known railway book dealer who said that he would be interested in an emailed list which I sent. He duly replied having made a list of about sixty books and offered me £85 IF I were to deliver them. As it would have cost £40 to do so, I didn't bother. Though I did wonder how many widows who were sorting out their late husband's effects had accepted.

Fast forward a year and my new girlfriend had convinced me to get back into modelling. I went to an exhibition with one of my friends and spotted said book dealers stall. So we started looking for titles matching those he had offered to buy. Now whilst I am aware (as a dealer in all things vintage myself and a professional artist) that the dealer has to make a profit.

BUT.

The titles we found ranged from £20 to £45.

That brings to mind another couple of words I won't use in front of my mother.

However, I SHALL have a look for that book. It will at least save me a bit of time, £5 on chassis and a lot of bad language. Cheers!

PM sent.

£40+ seems to be the going rate for some of Turton's volumes. I have 1-3, 7-9 and 11-13 also Bill Hudson's 3 & 4. If you want me to try and look something up.

I find the best place to buy books is ebay. I've had some outstanding volumes for basically nothing from general book dealers. It's the specialist dealers that are the real sharks.

Just taken the plunge and ordered an MR Fowler Class 483 4-4-0 by Millholme kits with Markits wheels set. Buxton had an allocation of 8 of this class in the late 1920s to replace ageing 1Ps and saturated 4-4-0s.

Love your platforms!

Are the flags and coping stones scale size to the ones at Buxton or other Derbyshire MR station?

If so, can you tell me the length, width and thickness of the coping stone please?

I am looking to create something similar for my 7mm scale layout and was hoping to visit some Derbyshire stations to take some photos and take measurements last year!

Thank you

The platforms are made from the Scalescenes' kit download. A new kit has been released R008a.  I don't know the measurements of Buxton's platforms, mine just seem to look right although looking at photos of Buxton the area outside the trainshed should be tarmac/crushed stone between the edging flags and the walls should be brick where platform 2 was extended and concrete sections for the walls of platform 3 when the extra trainshed was built. The photos you have in your post are the first incarnation, I redid them as they fouled the loading gauge in places.

Hi Jonathan.

It looks like the Scalescenes station platform has been superseded by a new product with the number R008a.

A bit chewed off at the moment. The LED Strip light I bought for the railway room exactly 2 years ago has failed, it wasn't a cheapo one either. On taking it down, the transformer is putting out 130v when the printed output is 60 -110v, there's also a burnt-out piece of printed circuit board on the back of the LED part of the fitting. Seems like a design fault to me.

I have just recently replaced one that I fitted for a friend of mine last August. Similar damage, though I haven't investigated the output. I do find that things are made with a minimum of materials nowadays and despite passing the relevant safety regulations are all made down to a price rather than up to a standard. I think that it is something that we are forced

The British made, all metal and very heavy fluorescent fittings installed when the shop was modernised in 1958 are still going strong.

I called the shop where I bought the LED light on Monday as I thought the transformer/LED driver had gone and wanted to know if they could get a replacement. I'm expecting a call from them tomorrow (Weds) so it will be interesting to see what they say about my findings.

I've got a similar power issue with a neon clock. I have one with blue led in the lounge and it's worked fine for years with the 12v DC supply it came with. A week ago it started flickering on and off which is very annoying. Trying to replace it has been a total mare. I can still get the same one but it's now well over £70 and as I only paid £16.99 for the original I was more than a little outraged. We eventually found a very nice replacement with a genuine blue neon ring light for £23 on Amazon. When it arrived we found that it had an American plug on the power supply and it has a 12v AC output . Not the end of the world I hear you say just buy an adapter. If only life was so simple. Being a yankee product it requires a 110v AC input and the best price I can get a 240v to 110v transformer with a UK plug for is £19.99 and I have to wait 2 weeks for it too boot. So what was only £23 has become £42.99 plus a total of £12.99 postage, £53.98 in all. No where on the Amazon add does it mention that it needs 110v AC input! To say that I'm not impressed with Amazon is an understatement to say the least. So even though it's not a like for like example I DO feel your pain!!!

Replacement LED tube fitted. I got a small discount from the shop that sold me the duff one. This one has a 5 year warranty so this and the receipt has been safely filed hopefully not for future use. To celebrate a helicopter shot.

Perhaps that should be "Drone Shot" now a days.

Contemplating buying a Jidenco MR Kirtley Class 1P 0-4-4WT. One was still around in 1935 so I could just about justify it, having sold off my Stanier engines.

I like the sound of that. Any excuse for obscure or antiquated locos really!

It does look rather quaint with outside frames and flying cranks and I am sure Buxton would have had some but I cannot find any photos of one at Buxton.

The only question you need to ask is: "Whose trainset?"

It's on trial / covering a breakdown / banking...

Agreed. So the Well Tank has been ordered after I found out the the boiler is pre-rolled and is the kit is cheaper than the LRM's who took over producing the kit. Need to find what size wheels I need which I think will be either 5'4" or 5'7" for the drivers.
