New Roco Z21 app

After it had crashed a couple of times did you try re-booting the iPad (turn the iPad off and on). That can sometimes help (apologies if I am teaching you to suck eggs)

I’ve also been running on an IPad 2 as well as a 64bitiPad Mini and neither have crashed so far. I have had a few other problems that I have reported though.

Yep, tried rebooting also - actually reset the IPad2 back to factory to ensure that there were no issue as it worked 100% or the time with the old app.

I have also noticed that the Wi-Fi transfer from iPad to iPad and phone doesn’t always work as an import - except when you do immediately after open the app.

Another thing I learned today - define one device as the master and only make changes on it! Guess who overwrote some changes he had made, luckily was able to recovers easily :)

A good tip. I have just done this and then emailed the 'file' for the other devices to import. It worked a charm.

I would now like to make a couple of changes to the master. But would appreciate advice on how to do this.

Do I go through the same email process to update the other devices? So that when I import the 'file' it would overwrite the previous entries.

Thanks

I use the Wi-Fi transfer to copy the files between devices, one phone used a throttle only as the screen is too small for turnouts, and 2 iPads. I email a copy of the file to myself simply to ensure I have a ‘backup’ file if it all goes belly up.

My problem is that as I build the layout I tweak it, add feedbacks and change parameters hence needing to remember to only change on one device and propagate rather than change on the device I have to hand.

I had added several feedbacks when sitting down later at night on an iPad 2, when I started operating a couple of days later I picked up the iPad 3 and then made some changes and copied those changes round having forgotten about the changes I made on the iPad 2 :(

You don’t overwrite the old configuration, it remains to choose but you cannot combine therefore the only choice is to recreate the changes to get a single, homologous version.

  • 3 weeks later...

The new IOS app is available on the App Store which has hopefully some changes under the hood that improve the performance on older iPads.

I am not sure that it solves the issues we have been having with colours or font sizes though. They have at least shown they are listening to the user base, even if the resolution isn’t necessarily what this user would agree with ;)

I was rather hoping that the font size changes would have applied to the layout screen rather than just the fonts in the app - it is the layout screen were I wanted to be able to make names larger, such as for turnout numbers, or route names - still far to small to read.

I think they are assuming that you don't need to see the turnout numbers on the main control panel, once the numbers are assigned you can forget about them, as you just touch the relevant icon to change the point.

Routes on the other hand .....

Is anyone have stability issues with this latest app version?

It works 100% of the time on my iPhone 6s but now crashes out when trying to get to the main 'steering' screen on the iPad 3 64gb running iOS 9.3.2. It has only run once on the iPad since the upgrade and the iPhone is only usable as a throttle, but I have the Multimaus for that :)

I have mailed an error report to Roco, just wonder if others have the issue?

I’ve only installed v1.0.4 on my iPad Mini 4 so far (iOS 11.2.6) and on that it works fine. I’ve not yet installed it on my iPad 2. If it is as wet tomorrow as predicted I may have time to give that a go and I’ll let you know...

I've installed the new Android app, and I'm very happy with it.

Sure, it will take a while to get used to it.

But, at the control panel editor there's no turntable function. That's a big flaw.

Contact Roco, I've asked for a level crossing symbol.

Hi

I am looking for advice on Programming on the Main with the new app. I am using the Android version of the app.

I have selected CV Programming then Loco (POM). Which then lists my trains/locos. When i select any loco I get the message 'No locomotive found with this address'

Yet if I use the old app, no problems.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

It isn't anything to do with Railcom nor have Roco gone 'proprietary', this is misinformation - or to use the latest parlance 'fake news' :)

It doesn't work for me either and I all my locos are Railcom equipped and all my equipment passes Railcom satisfactorily plus if you use the Z21 maintenance app on your PC then you will find that that you can Programme on Main successfully, therefore it is only an issue with the app.

What you need to do is email Roco through the app to tell them off the issues that you are having, if they don't know it's broke they wont fix it :)

Using the App, I can program on the main using 'Manual' but using 'Loco (POM)' is erratic. It sometimes sees some, but not all, of my Zimo decoders and occasionally sees some of my Lenz decoders, but never sees my TCS decoders. So yes, I guess it's another defect in the new App.

I must admit I'm quite surprised how slowly the various issues are being fixed in the new App.  Unless they only have a single part-time developer (which would be worrying) I would expect to see a new version at least every couple of weeks, each version fixing a series of bugs and/or adding new functionality. From the correspondence I have had back after reporting bugs it would appear they are receiving a high volume of bug reports and/or improvement requests/suggestions.

It is highly unlikely that Roco/Fleischmann have any people at all working on the app - it will almost certainly be a specialist company that is developing and fixing the app with the requirements provided by Roco/Fleischmann.

If that is the case (which I agree it most likely is), then I'm even more surprised a development house isn't using a modern agile development process which would result in new versions every couple of week.

I am sure that the dev shop is Agile - however they will only work as fast as the requirements, fixes and bugs come from Roco/Fleischmann to them and even when they arrive only if the budget has arrived with them (though they should fix the code errors as part of warranty :))

I am also aware that getting stuff through the Apple approval process isn't easy ..
