Coach identification.

Not too familiar with the various diagrams but looks like a Gresley carriage, I believe there was one known as something like a locker brake vehicle. It had a normal guards compartment with little more than a locker for parcels and luggage. The rest of the carriage being passenger accommodation.

Someone with greater knowledge will no doubt be along soon

  • 1 year later...

Hoping to model this train as closely to the formation as possible, it was the set with the Devon Belle observation car. The layout I’m building is part of the triangle where the set was turned so is my excuse to run passenger stock on a freight only line.

Another view of the coach. D196 Which I will build from a Comet Wizard kit.

Tried to get a clearer view... if possible could someone identify the 2nd to 4th coaches? The 4th one looks more flat sided. Apologies no scanner just a photo of a photo.

The rest of the rake appear to be mk1s? The Pullman is car 332 which luckily Bachmann have done. Getting a Devon Belle in maroon and cream is going to be the hard part. I think Golden age models may have done one in this livery? Sc280m was the one in the train.

If it helps Mike, I had a Devon Belle livery obs. car and repainted the brown of the Pullman livery with maroon using a ruling pen, carefully leaving the cream untouched. A satisfactory result.

Used it for the Welsh Chieftain train.

The 4th coach looks like a Mk1 RKB, with 3 doors in a row in the middle and plain side at the far end where the buffet bar was. The 2nd & 3rd coaches have 7 windows, so look to be Thompson FO. The toilets ends are together. The 2nd coach appears to have a fairing over the solebar, so would be one of the ex-Flying Scotsman ones.

Thank you Mark.

I suspected the 4th coach was a catering vehicle of some sort being an excursion train. Comet/Wizard do this so it’ll be either a full kit or sides on a Bachmann I haven’t decided yet.

Are kits for the 2nd and 3rd Thomson coaches available?

Im guessing the rest of mk1s in the train would all be open vehicles in a excursion train of this sort? But then without better photos I don’t think we can be sure.

Thanks Merf id like to see a photo of it if you have one.

The following year 1963, the Devon Belle car was in maroon which would be the easier option but I’ve always thought that looked bland compared to the maroon and cream livery.

Will try and remember to get a photo tomorrow when at the club.

Southern Pride do brass sides for the FO in square and round windowed versions.

As the Mk1 brake is a BSO, it would be reasonable to assume the adjacent coaches are TSO. However, I don't think the 5th & 6th coaches are Mk1.  Possibly Thompson, but very hard to tell from the photos (you can just about make out a Gresley bogie next to the RKB).

Tried again but it’s a small 6x4 photo and I don’t think scanning it will reveal anything more, even under a magnifying glass it’s just too small and obscured by trees.

And the shot which started it. Ive always liked this shot of it at Aintree.

That really is very nice Merfyn. Thank you. That livery is so much nicer than the plain maroon.

For now I’ve gone and ordered a plain maroon Hornby one and could run the 1963 train. Although that had 2 Pullman Mk1s in its formation and I can’t make out what the 2nd Pullman is. I’ve got car 332 which ran in the 1962 train. I’ve no info on what the Pullman cars were in 63 and  I’ve got no other shots of the rest of this train so could run it right away with some mk1s blissfully unaware until some shots come up.

But my intention is to model the 1962 train and I wouldn’t mind trying what you did with a Brown and cream Belle car. Id still keep the Maroon liveried one as I’m guessing the sides are different? It looks to have vertical wood panelling where the maroon and cream one doesn’t?

I've ordered the Comet coaches for the 62 train for collection at York.
