Seanem44
Greetings all! I am building a Settle & Carlisle layout in N Gauge. I plan on posting updates on my progress here as well as solicit all the usual critiques, hints and help. The layout will be approximately 14 feet x 30 inches and will feature a viaduct on one side and station on the other. The station and goods yard borrows bits and pieces from more than one on the line, and since it is not to represent any one station, I am just simply naming the layout the Fells. For now at least. All my buildings are from the Lydle End range and will need some modifications to them. Paint color being one, and fixing the ugly windows being another. I am currently in the baseboard phase and I plan on one 6 foot section which will contain the viaduct, and two four foot sections on higher legs which will make up the station and goods. Special thanks to Harlequin for taking my vision and arranging it into something I can better visualize. RMweb Premium Physicsman Posted February 8, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 8, 2018 (edited) Welcome to the S&C section, Sean. I noticed your post (I assume it was yours!) in the layout planning section, a week or so ago. "Reorte's" (Simon's) comment to post here seems to have been acted upon. This is the second N gauge layout to appear here in the last 2 weeks and I hope you'll get a substantial amount of feedback, as required. As for your layout plan, yes, it looks pretty S&C to me. Have a look at pages 102/126/187 (I think) of my Kirkby Luneside thread to see the basic Kirkby Stephen plan upon which KL2 is based - very similar to yours. Seanem44
So I think I'm close to finalizing a layout. Once again, Harlequin has gone above and beyond to assist me by reversing the layout design. I feel this version provides a little more breathing room.
RMweb Premium Reorte Posted February 13, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 13, 2018 The Midland liked their three-ways, so the turnout that crosses back to the main line and branches in to the goods shed loop on the left might've been combined into a three way (e.g. Kirkby Stephen). If you want the hassle of a three-way!
Seanem44
I have purchased a box of N gauge Peco code 55 and three Peco Viaduct kits... Building will begin in earnest. I have decided that for the benchwork I will go with two hollow core doors. The only downside is this puts me at about 13". Another downside is elevating the track. I imagine I can just build foam up about four or five inches wchich should allow me to fit the viaduct in. The concern here though is with the turnouts and operating them. The other consideration I now have is simplifying the layout. Though I love this design, the point work alone would be fairly expensive on account of the slips. I have been thinking about modelling Ormside, which would allow me to build almost a prototype and the pointwork layout is fairly simple. It models closely to Ais Gill, having a crossover and two layby sidings. This might be a good option as it would allow me to actually finish the layout quicker and more easily. Interested to hear thoughts on this, as this will be my first layout.
