RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted February 10, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 10, 2018 A question for Southern folk, or to those who have access to the PW on a preserved railway... SR concrete chipping bins, what are their dimensions? I have this excellent recent book which contains lots of photos and drawings of various concrete products. Whilst it has photos of a chipping bin there's no accompanying drawing. Any help appreciated. Just in case it's not clear what I mean by chipping bin, it's one of these: My guess so far is that they are about 7'6" long, 3'6" deep and 2'6" tall. RMweb Gold Dunsignalling Posted February 10, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 10, 2018 (edited) Pretty much the size I've been making them for Bournemouth Central. I worked the length out as being a bit more than the distance across three sleepers (inclusive) in the top photo, then the rest in proportion. Mind you, we are both assuming they were all the same.............. John Edited February 10, 2018 by Dunsignalling
LBRJ
Roxey Mouldings do a resin kit for one. Which someone may have and be able to get the dimensions off - it looks in proportion.

John Thanks John, I worked out the approx length from, as you say, three sleeper spacings and the height from multiplying adjacent rail heights. Annoyingly a few years back I cycled past lots on the old Wadebridge to Bodmin cycle track but didn't stop to do a quick measure.
Ashley Bridge
Roxey Mouldings do a resin kit for one. Which someone may have and be able to get the dimensions off - it looks in proportion. I’ve got an order to pick up from Dave (Roxey Mouldings) at the Tonbridge Show. We’re there with Batcombe, I could enquire or pick one up for you? I’m assuming we’re talking about 7 mm? Rich. Yes, I'm aware Roxey do a resin moulding for one in 7mm: http://www.roxeymouldings.co.uk/product/1052/7b002-sr-concrete-ballast-bin/. Truth be told, I think it looks a bit basic and lacks the detail of the prototype, so I'd prefer to knock up my own from plasticard. It's not a particularly complex build so shouldn't take long...just needs some dimensions!

I'm suspicious that some were bigger/deeper having looked through a load of books with these things hardly ever featured of course. Phil
RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted February 15, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 15, 2018 Out of interest, I've come across a drawing of a LNER ballast bin partway down this thread... https://www.lner.info/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=5459 Obviously not the same, but has a family resemblance. RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted February 15, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 15, 2018 Suggests that as there is a LNER Drawing there may well be a LSWR one in the NRM. Phil
